World's Worst Airport Terminals

Most airports are awful. At best they’re joyless econoboxes, at worst purgatorial warehouses of stalled lives.

Some airports deserve special condemnation, though. In some cases, they deserve to be literally condemned. Assembling this top 10 list of misfits I scanned professional surveys and delay statistics and asked my frequent-traveler friends to come up with the 10 airports where you'd least like to spend an extra hour.

I'm sticking to major airports here. There are small airports around the world that consist of a shanty that swelters in the summer and freezes in the winter, with a hole in the wall for baggage claim and a single sad concession stand. (I'm actually describing my experience at Udaipur Airport in India in 1999). But that's not fair. These 10 airports should deliver better service, and they don't. I'm listing them from least worst to the absolute worst.

Chicago Midway Airport Chicago Midway Airport (fboyd)Chicago Midway Airport (fboyd)

Chicago's Midway airport ranked as the nation's worst for on-time departures in the most recent federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics data, earning it a spot on this list. It isn't a bad place to hang out, with a new food court and a frequent subway connection to downtown Chicago, but any airport is the worst airport if you're stuck there and you aren't getting on a plane.

Consider this the least worst of our set of bad airports. Midway's curse may come more from Chicago's notoriously difficult weather than from any problem the airport itself can fix.

"Paris" Beauvais Airport, France "Paris" Beauvais Airport, France (scalleja)"Paris" Beauvais Airport, France (scalleja)

A solid 50 miles north of Paris, this depressing low-cost box of an airport in Picardy got saddled with a bait-and-switch name by Ryanair, the ultimate bait-and-switch airline. It rated as one of the world's worst airports by Frommers.com friends SleepingInAirports.net because of its lack of seating, lack of services, and general half-tent, half-warehouse atmosphere.

It lacks a rail link to Paris and closes overnight, so hope that your flight doesn't get too delayed, or you may be camping out on the lawn.

For years, Ryanair liked to play this trick of stamping the names of famous cities on distant small-town airports with poor transit links that weren't designed for much tourist traffic: thus Beauvais and "Barcelona Reus," which is more than an hour and a half from Barcelona.

Newark Airport Terminal B Newark Airport Terminal B (livatlantis)Newark Airport Terminal B (livatlantis)

All three major New York City airports are on this list, in large part because they're run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a hideously mismanaged money sink that does a poor job of responding to air travelers' needs.

Newark got two stars -- the worst rating -- in JD Power's 2010 airport study. It's also the nation's worst airport for on-time arrivals in the most recent federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics data.

Fortunately you'll be stuck waiting at your point of origin, because Newark is an awfully dull airport to wait for a flight in. The airport idiotically puts security before individual piers in Terminals A and B, which means that rather than have a whole terminal's food and shopping to entertain you, you're stuck out on a single pier. It's pretty quiet out there.

LaGuardia Airport US Airways Terminal
,LaGuardia Airport US Airways Terminal, New York City (andrea_r)LaGuardia Airport US Airways Terminal, New York City (andrea_r)
New York City

I don't hate LaGuardia, but it was recently rated the worst major airport in America by both JD Power and Associates and Zagat Survey, so who am I to argue?

LaGuardia has no rail link to anywhere -- even between its own terminals -- and regularly suffers from congestion, overcrowding, and delays. While its terminals are shaping up, they're still each smaller and with fewer services than you'd expect from an airport at one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

I'm giving the US Airways Terminal the worst-terminal award here because at least the central terminal has an atrium and the Delta terminal just got some new food options. The US Airways terminal is dull and sad.

Amman Queen Alia Airport, JordanAmman Queen Alia Airport , Jordan (pshegubj)Amman Queen Alia Airport , Jordan (pshegubj)

One of the two airports rated "two stars" by global consulting firm Skytrax, Amman gets lousy ratings for services that might be useful if you're hanging around -- bathroom cleanliness, places to rest, children’s play facilities, and service counters.

Reviews on the Skytrax website make it clear that you may just want to "hold it" in this airport: they're almost universally appalled at the state of the bathrooms. Those reviewers have probably never been to JFK Terminal 3, but still, that isn't good.

Why should we expect that Russian airport staff in Russia would speak a language other than Russian?

Hong Kong is one of the best airports I have gone through.

LAX is bizarre the employees' treat you like they were treated in prison before they were hired...premployment requirement standards must include numerous body piercings, at least two visible offensive "Gang Tats" and the ability to talk down and belittle the customer. Southwest airlines preaches how all the airlines charge baggage fees and they don't...but Southwest will charge you $15 to stand in the front of the line to stampede into their cattle car to find a seat....Good Luck if you travel with your family advertise that...fees to stand in line ridiculous...the fun airline....Paint a "Greyhound" on the side of all their planes...how two-faced...

Several years ago I swore that I would never go through CDG again. At Christmas I was involuntarily re-routed there and all the horror(s) came back -- I had to move from the intra-European terminal to the the transatlantic one -- a COMPLETE nightmare -- disorganized, bottlenecks and of course, french 'officials' -- I made my flight using my 'frequent flyer' status to go through the 'faster' security -- many were not so lucky -- my flight was delayed for over an hour in an attempt to corral the remaining passengers -- when we took off I again swore never again! That said, where is Heathrow on the list -- don't let my rant start about THAT airport!

Air flights that are more than 4 hours delayed should get you a hotel at their expense

The worst airport experience I had was in Atlanta. I refuse to ever fly through there again. I also do not fly Delta anymore because of how I was treated there.

I flew out of Detroit to Charlotte, Chicago and Nashville pretty frequently for about three years and I never had issues at any of these airports. I really like the Charlotte airport, actually.

The Indy airport IS very nice, and even has some good food and a fresh popcorn store. I believe the vendors there have to agree to regular pricing - meaning they can't gouge travelers. No $12 hot dogs. We like Denver also - they even have artwork in the shuttle train tunnels. No, I am NOT employed by Frontier.

If some of these airports are being "renovated" because they are "unsalvageable" the new ones should be modeled after Orlando Interational Airport. Not only is it beautiful, it is super clean (and that includes the restrooms). The airport itself is huge, but there are only 2 terminals. A subway-like above-ground shuttle runs every 5 minutes to bring passengers to and from their gates. There are so many shops you won't be able to visit them all. There is also a Hyatt hotel right inside Terminal B and both terminals have so many good restaurants that you could literally take someone on a date there. Another bonus: both the baggage claim and parking systems are supe organized, which make your trip a hassle-free one.

Is Atlanta the one where you have to walk miles and they carry you in golf carts (if you are lucky?) That airport was atrocious. CDG I know my way about.
  • Jimmy  •  Wayne, Michigan  •  26 days ago
Atlanta should be on this list! One of the busiest airports in America and what a #$%$ hole! I got bounced around to 11 different gates and 2 terminals one day in a 6 hour delay!

CDG is a nightmare as well.

New Yorker here. Agree that all three NYC airports belong on the list thanks to the Port Authority, but disagree a bit on reasoning and what's the worst terminal. Bar none, LaGuardia's central terminal is the absolute worst. Who care's if there's an atrium if, no matter what, you need to trek through a narrow tier with insufficient seating, third world bathrooms and air conditioner puddles that the airport staff doesn't even bother to try to warn anyone of or fix? The reporter is right about what's dingy, but misses what's so hideously uncomfortable that a little dinge seems not so bad in return. At least at USAir terminal, bad as it is, you don't have to keep your bags single file when you walk to your cramped gate.

Delta Terminal 3 at JFK may also be dingy, and thankfully not long for this world, but the food options aren't as bad as suggested. There may be no Bobby Van's like at the new American Terminal, but there's a Balducci's, a Chili's sit down, a BK and a Starbucks. All crap, except maybe Balducci's, but manageable. And the terminal itself not exactly cramped either. Another saving grace, is that security waits can be almost non-existent.

The airlines have invested too much in New York to leave things to the Port Authority. That's why you see brand new JFK JetBlue and JFK American terminals and why you'll see a brand new JFK Delta terminal soon.

But there's no hope for the LGA Central Terminal - shared by basically American, United/Cont and a bunch of second tier carriers each with a handful of gates. No airline has incentive to step it up and we know exactly what the Port Authority will do - nothing.

The LaGuardia Central Terminal is a war zone and it's a war zone with no hope. That's the worst terminal in New York, if not the United States or the Western World.

The head line said the 10 worst TERMINALS but the first listing was Midway. The terminal had nothing to do about being selected but Chicago's weather causing delays. Did Shasha forget what her artical about or is this just another JUNK Yahoo attention getter?
  • Paul  •  26 days ago
Rediculous! O'hare is worse than Midway in both on time flights and the security lines. I'm flying Midway if I can help it.

they are saying Johannesburg is effecient ???? #$%$ ! perhaps at stealing your luggage, your car, your cellphone ......in fact anything that you are not holding onto. For goodness sakes there are vendors (with automated machines) selling heavy duty shrinkwrapping (done while you watch and NOT cheap) for your luggage in the terminals so that there is some chance your luggage will not be pilfered from the check-in point to the plane ! Johnnesburg looks good on the outside but its "Africa" on the inside .....BEWARE !

I guess you have never been to the Frankfurt airport. CDG is a breeze compared to Frankfurt.
