Located at the point where the Llŷn peninsula meets the Cambrian coast, PORTHMADOG was once the busiest slate port in North Wales. Nowadays, it's a pleasant enough town to spend a night or two, although it sadly makes little of its situation on the north bank of the vast, mountain-backed estuary. Instead, attention is heaped upon the folly of Portmeirion, almost three miles east of town, and the Ffestiniog Railway that originally carried slate down from Blaenau Ffestiniog through verdant mountain scenery.
