Guadeloupe's premier resort area, LE GOSIER, 7km east of Pointe-à-Pitre, is a small town with a dual personality. One side of town is the area known as Pointe de la Verdure, a secluded, gated complex, packed with car parks and unimaginative condominium-style buildings. Further east along the main road, boulevard Général-de-Gaulle, you'll find a Caribbean village of colonial houses, apartment buildings, and narrow streets perched above a small public beach.

Good snorkelling is right off the beach thanks to a capsized tug near the landing dock and a coral reef full of underwater life – bring a mask and flippers with you. Local fishermen ferry sunbathers back and forth daily from 8.30am–5pm in small motorboats from the pier at the east end of the town beach, closest to the islet. Bring a picnic lunch, or grab a bite from the dockside snack shacks.
