Schubert considered STEYR "inconceivably lovely", when he stayed here in 1819 and wrote the famous Trout Quintet, and although he was hardly the world's most travelled man he wasn't far wrong. Strategically and dramatically situated at the fast-flowing confluence of two alpine rivers, Steyr is characterized by its picturesque zigzag riverfront of red rooftops. It grew rich on the trade in iron ore from the Eisenerzer Alps, and then, in the nineteenth century, became one of the most important arms-manufacturing towns in Austria.
