A stunningly beautiful mosaic graces the facade, one of Jerusalem's most famous landmarks, designed by Antonio Barluzzi (1924). It is believed that this is the garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed before his arrest (Mark 14:32-46). An olive grove, whose trees are said to have been grown from shoots 2,000 years old, stands next to the church. The dim interior is due to the muted light from windows made of thin sheets of alabaster. The mosaic floor exactly follows the pattern of the earlier Byzantine basilica. Look up to see the unusual designs of the ceiling.
