The University was established together with the Academy of Sciences by decree of Peter the Great in 1724. Since 1804, the University has occupied part of the 400 meters-long building of the Twelve Colleges, a magnificently unusual building designed by Trezzini. During Stalin's time, attacks against the "old intelligentsia" did not pass the University by and many scientists were arrested in connection with the "Academic Case." Vladimir Putin studied here, and the university remains prestigious both within Russia and abroad.
