The monastery was founded by Tsar Fedor Ioannovich in gratitude for delivering Moscow from the attacks of the Crimean Khan Kazy Girei in 1591-1593. It was built at the site where Russian soldiers camped to get ready for the battle and were blessed by the revered Donskaia Icon of the Mother of God. Now this icon is found in the Bol'shoi (big) Cathedral of the Donskaia Icon of God's Mother. The tombs of some of the most historically important Russian families have been preserved in the monastery's spacious cemetery. Services are held daily in the Malyi (small) Cathedral of Donskoi monastery, and there are also wonder-working icons and holy relics.
