Edvard Munch's works were donated to the city of Oslo after his death in 1944 and the museum was purpose-built in 1963. The collection contains thousands of Munch's works, including half of his paintings, all of his surviving etchings, as well as several graphics and a few biographical items. In the basement, an exhibition of letters, photographs and other mementos gives fascinating insight into the painter's life. Guided tours are given. Within the museum there is Cafe Munch and a shop with everything from simple prints to giant inflatable Scream figures.
