Opened in 1826 by Ludwig I, the Alte Pinakothek (Old Picture Gallery) represents the pinnacle of the Emperor's achievements as a collector. In fact, Ludwig merely continued the work of his ancestors, as some of the pieces exhibited here were first acquired by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria in the 16th Century. Entering the museum for the first time, visitors are confronted with a truly regal collection; over 800 awesome paintings documenting the history of European art from the 14th to the 18th Centuries await perusal. The collection of old German masters and the gorgeous Rubens gallery are particularly outstanding.
