When financial support finally dried up in the early 1990s, a legendary era came to an end. Built in the 1950s, the Schiller Theater was one of West Berlin's most popular theatres, hosting productions by the likes of Samuel Beckett. Yet when the Berlin Wall came down, the city had too many theatres and too little money, with the result that several world-class cultural establishments fell victim to the local government's austerity policies. Although it was reopened by private investors in the mid-1990s, the Schiller Theater has never regained its former glamour or quality. Its future is more than uncertain.
