Since 1989, this 23 square kilometer scientific reserve, considered a wet low-mountain forest, has been devoted to the preservation of the ebano verde or green ebony (Magnolia pallescens), an endangered native tree coveted for its precious wood. A total of 621 plant species are protected, 159 of which are endemic to the area. The park is situated between the towns of Jarabacoa and Constanza. Protected fauna includes eight amphibious species, ten reptile species, some mammals (including bats and the endemic solenodonte) and various birds, such as the cotorra (amazona ventralis) and the parrot (aratinga chloroptera).
