Even with its startling concrete torii gate, this small, charming shrine in the middle of Sagano is a popular must-see, especially for Japanese women. Literature specialists will be familiar with the Japanese classic The Tale of Genji which tells us about Lady Rokujo being suddenly visited by Prince Genji, after they had parted, at remote Ninomiya. She had joined her daughter who was preparing for her stint at the Ise shrines. To paraphrase from Zeami's Noh play entitled Nonomiya: Saturated with the flowers of Nonomiya--How will it be when autumn has expired?
