Set high on a hill a short distance from the city is the landmark water tower built in 1927 to supply water to the higher parts of Paddington. The Water Board battled for 12 years to get the Paddington Water Tower built on the hill. The reinforced concrete tank is 22 meters (70 feet) at its highest point. As the trams passed by below in those days, the Tramway Department provided electricity for the centrifugal pump to propel water from the tank, and the residents living high on the many hills of Paddington were blessed with running water!
