Some 50km inland from Byron Bay via Lismore is NIMBIN, site of the famed Aquarius Festival that launched Australian hippie culture in 1973; it's a friendly little place and synonymous with the country's alternative life. The surrounding rainforest is dotted with as many as fifty communes, while the town itself is famous for live music, crafts and New Age therapies, but mainly marijuana. Visitors are invariably offered dope as soon as they set foot in town and you'll see it smoked openly on the streets; however, that doesn't mean to say you can wave joints around and expect not to get arrested …
