The small city of PHRAE is famous for its woodcarving, and for producing the deep-blue, baggy working shirts seen all over Thailand. The main reason to stop in Phrae is to explore the old city, delineated by an earthen moat, with its lanes filled with traditional teak houses, and to enjoy the old-fashioned and friendly nature of a place still virtually untouched by tourism.
Dotted around the old town, several temples are worth visiting and are easily reached on foot; in fact, a stroll through the area's quiet lanes is recommended, with traditional teak houses to gaze at and a glimpse of local life as extended families congregate sociably outside.
