Flickr photo of the day: Peddling for a living

Although shopping malls are growing ever more popular, the ubiquitous Manila street vendor isn’t becoming an endangered species. If it can be loaded onto a motor scooter, bicycle or oversized tricycle, street vendors haul it to the city and set up shop in their favorite location.

Both registered and unregistered vendors number in the hundreds of thousands and average a humble $50 U.S. per month for their efforts. Yet there is something to be said for being one’s own boss. The vendor in this photograph, taken by Rita Willaert, has converted a trishaw (a version of the peddled rickshaw) to carry his assorted plastic items to town.
