Flickr photo of the day: Monument to learning
In early 1900, the progressive reformers wanted to make sure every child had the opportunity to get an education; this included those living in the hills and hollows of eastern Tennessee. The architectural firm of Adams and Alsop was chosen to design a one-room schoolhouse that would be affordable, functional and attractive.
Beautifully photographed, in nostalgic golden light, by Brian Hammonds, the 106-year-old “Island View School” is located on “bottom land” by the French Broad River near Sevierville. It provided the Three Rs: reading, writing and arithmetic to children grades 1 through 8.
