Snow monkeys live farther north than any primate other than humans and enjoy lolling in hot springs during snowy weather. (Who wouldn’t?) Japanese macaques are the famous “See no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil” monkeys: Mizaru, Mikazaru and Mazaru, who made their debut in the 17th century, carved in wood above the door to the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikko, Japan.

Photographed by Taiwanese photographer Alan Tsai, these two are probably watching the humans who have come to watch them, each finding the other thoroughly fascinating, at the Jigokudani hot spring, or onsen, in Nagano.
