Five Miles Up with … Shania Twain

We can guess what Shania Twain would say to country stars without big hair: "That don't impress me much!" The Canadian crooner (pictured here at the ACMAs in April 2013) rose to fame in the '90s at the same speed as her hair by churning out hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" and "Any Man of Mine." Any man of hers better like teased-out tresses!

It’s said that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. That certainly holds true in the case of “Shania: Still the One.” The concert’s continued success has led to 22 new performances, the first of which launches today at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. As for its namesake, five-time Grammy-winning country megastar Shania Twain, we get a feeling the Ontario, Canada native feels right at home in Nevada… as long as there’s access to a horse and an unpaved road.

What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase?
Earplugs.

Carry-on or check-in?
Carry-on.

Window or aisle?
Window if I'm traveling with someone. If alone, aisle so I don't have to hop over a stranger to use the bathroom.

What’s your idea of the perfect vacation?
Being on a deserted island with horses, surrounded by crystal, turquoise water.

Tell us about a vacation you’ve taken that’s come close thus far.
The Exumas in the Bahamas, a district of undeveloped islands that I visit often. Each time I go I dream about riding a horse on the beaches.

What’s the worst vacation mishap you’ve experienced?
When leaving for my son’s school break this summer, our first flight out of Nassau was cancelled, causing us to miss our connection in Miami for a direct flight to Rome. We were then put on a flight from Miami to London for a connecting flight to Rome. We finally made it to Rome, but our luggage did not. Now, already a day behind schedule, our final destination to the Italian countryside was delayed yet another day while we waited for our bags. I guess we were lucky it came at all!

Where’s your favorite destination for performing?
My favorite place to perform these days is at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. It's the best stage I've ever performed on.

What's the most unusual souvenir you’ve ever brought back from a trip?
I love window-shopping for souvenirs, but never bring any back.

Ever try a food you wished you hadn't?
Natto. It's a bitter, sour, sticky, slimy dish of fermented soybeans. I love soybeans, but not prepared this way.

Favorite accommodations you've ever stayed in.
A yacht in the Exumas.

Favorite restaurant you’ve discovered while traveling.
Room service in our cave at Le Grotte Della Civita in Sassi Di Matera, where we were served homemade food from the cook's personal kitchen.

Biggest regret you've ever had while on vacation.
Not asking if the Arabian horse I rode a few years ago during a trip to the Pyramids in Cairo was for sale. I would have taken him home with me and still think about that horse today.

The one thing you're willing to splurge on when traveling above all else.
Flying private.

Three artists on your travel playlist?
Lana Del Rey, Birdy and "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons.

You only get one more trip in your lifetime. Where will it be?
Horse trekking anywhere with no roads.
