  • December 14: B.K.S. Iyengar was born on this date in 1918

    Guruji Iyengar

    Ninety-five years ago today — December 14, 1918 — Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (B.K.S.) "Guruji" Iyengar was born in Karnataka, India. As the author of more than a dozen books about yoga (including his seminal work Light on Yoga) Iyengar is credited with exporting the practice to the Western world. He counts Pope John Paul II, whose photo hangs on a wall in his studio, among the countless students he has personally instructed. His style of yoga is so popular that his very surname is a noun in the Oxford English Dictionary. Suffice it to say, Iyengar is a living icon.

    Last year, at the end of a business trip to India, I made a pilgrimage to Pune, Maharashtra to visit the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI). After spending an afternoon under the tutelage of Abhay Javakhedkar, one of RIMYI's many excellent instructors, I was admitted to interview Guruji Iyengar at the end of his daily book signing.   • July 17: Walt Disney dedicated Disneyland on this date in 1955

    On this date -- July 17, 1955 -- Walt Disney dedicated his eponymous theme park in Anaheim, Calif., and the Mecca of American family vacation destinations was born. The original park included Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Tomorrowland, its own railroad, and the world's first Ferris wheel. The land had been purchased just two years earlier, and the park took just over a year to build; an astonishing feat until you consider that construction was directly supervised by Disney himself. The dedication ceremony was broadcast live on ABC in the video clip below (hosted by none other than future California governor and American President Ronald Reagan), which includes a few brief remarks from Uncle Walt:
