This will be a trip across the US trying to cram in as much as possible in two weeks while avoiding interstate highways as much as possible. The main target of this trip will my home state of Kentucky. But, other areas of great interest will be two passes through separate areas of Arkansas as well as taking old US Route 66 through most of Oklahoma. People looking for a trip where there's always a McDonald's less than 20 minutes away should bail ot of this trip planner now.

While not an original Route 66 restaurant, the reviews and looks of this place will certainly make me consider stopping here if I'm hungry while passing through Flagstaff either on my way out on May 6th or on my way back on May 19th.

This trip actually begins in Rancho Cucamonga, California just one block south of what used to be US Route 66. There's no stops listed from there to here because, frankly, Yahoo's switch over to "Travel Guides" is pretty lacking in content so far. I guess it will be up to people like me to help fill it in.

Anyway, this first stint unfortunatley had to follow the interstates in the interest of time. "Historic Route 66" (aka Foothill Blvd) hits I-15 which I will take north to I-40 where I'll head east.

I've stayed at this Motel 6 before, but so long ago that I won't be writing a review until after I stay there again. Especially with the first leg of this journey mainly intended to just get some miles behind me, there's no need for anything fancy or "touristy." All I need is a clean, comforatble, and inexpensive place to sleep for the night. I know that Motel 6's in other areas such as southern California are generally to be avoided. But, I have found that all of the ones in New Mexico along the major highways I have traveled over the past 20 years are clean, safe, and staffed with friendly people. I hope that will once again be the case.

This is one of the places I'll consider stopping at if I'm hungry while passing through Albuquerque. It's the first example of the good ol' hole-in-the wall, been around forever, who cares about my cholesterol or calorie count restaurant along my journey.

After passing through Albuquerque, I'll continue east on I-40 until I can finally get off the dreaded, boring interstate at Santa Rosa, New Mexico and start heading east on a combination of US-54, US-84, and US-60.

This was where Buddy Holly recorded some of his first big hit records. This is also one of the first "big" stops after I finally get way from the interstate. I will explain more about the significance of Buddy Holly to me later down the line as this journey pulls into Lubbock, Texas.

After leaving Clovis, it's east on US-84 combined with other co-signed US higways as I head into Texas and territory that will generally make me nervous as I drive into "The South" with a California license plate on my car.

With no disrespect to Elvis Presley, his singing talent, and his overall impact, I've always felt that Buddy Holly was actually more influential and the TRUE king of rock and roll. Holly was the first major rock artist to write most of his own songs, and he became a fabulous producer in the latter months of his all-too-brief career. Without Holly setting such a precedent, there might have been no Beatles and we'd all still be listening to Pat Boone records. :P Again, with my attempt to stay off in the interstates on this trip, this shot from Clovis, New Mexico where Holly did some significant recording to Lubbock where he was born should be pretty cool to remember Holly and learn about other artists who came out of west Texas.

Well, here we'll be in Broken Bow, Oklahoma after coming northeast out of Lubbock and then heading east on US-70 after crossing the Red River. Pretty damn sad that Yahoo had none of my other stops in between, huh? This is almost as bad as their home page redesign where business and regional searches suddenly disappeared! Why do I complain and keep doing this? Only in the hope that somebody from Yahoo will read this and realise that maybe they should have converted some of the data from the old City Guides (which, of course, those that still exsist aren't compatible with this over-programmed crap).

Anyway, this stretch of the trip will be one of the longest hauls with not as much time to look around and take photographs. This Microtel hasn't been bagged on too much in the reviews as I write this, and it's another inexpensive stop. And, it has free wi-fi, and I'll certainly need to get some of my photos off my laptop with the puny hard drive and upload them to my server for safe keeping.

Since Yahoo hasn't seen fit to get more info added on this city, all I can see is that Broken Bow is near Beavers Bend. Well, if the beavers bend, it will certainly help to have a broken bow. :D

This stop on my trip isn't exactly right, but it's very close.

After pulling out of Broken Bow, Oklahoma on US-70 and going through Hot Springs, Arkansas, I'll hop onto I-30 very briefly, then head north on AR-5 into southeastern Little Rock to visit the home I lived in and the elementary school I went to in the mid-1970's.

I don't plan on actually visiting this museum. But, it is at MacArthur Park where I do plan to stop for at least a little while. And, no, this is not the park from that cheesy old song. :)

As a boy, I remember going to this park and marveling at all of the huge, old magnolia trees that were there and in full, magnificent bloom. I hope that they are still there.

Unfortunately, on the day I am writing this, there is a news story linked on the front page of Yahoo! about how Little Rock is now one of the most dangerous cities in the United States. So, as a slow, older dude in a relatively nice car with a California license plate on it, it's probably a good idea not to sit in one place too long in downtown Little Rock. What a shame.

Pulling out of Little Rock, in the interest of saving time, I will have another stint of having to get on the interstate. After having originally left I-40 in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, I will hit it here heading east, then go north on I-55. I'll get off again between Turrell and Frenchmans Bayou to get onto the infamous "Highway 61" as I head up to spend the night in Blytheville, Arkansas.

Before settling down for the night, it's time to find an interestng little place to get some good road food. As of when I'm writing this, there aren't any Yahoo reviews for this barbeque joint. But, I've heard some good things about it elsewhere. So, I'll use the ol' drive-thru and then head off to my motel.

This is going to be yet another motel where placement along my journey along with a relatively low price is all I'm looking for. With nothing too horrible said about this place at the time I am writing this, this looks like the best bet in Blytheville. I might have a hard time sleeping here because this is the last night of my trip before the main goal of my journey begins -- entering my home state of Kentucky for the first time since 1983.

The stretch from here will probably be low on things already pre-entered into the Yahoo Travel Guides. So, from here, it's north on US-61 into Missouri. Then, at New Madrid, it's a somewhat oddball route on county and local roads to near the town of Dorena. Instead of taking the usual old bridges into Kentucky, I'm gonna kick it old school and take the Dorena-Hickman Ferry across the Mississippi River.

Once into Hickman, it's another oddball journey across minor Kentucky State Highways and other local roads as I take a meandering route to Fancy Farm. From there, it's east to Mayfield and Murray, and then a route that basically follows US-68/KY-80 to Russellville. Then, the journey heads to Franklin.

As a World War II buff, I hope that this will be a nice monument to take a picture of. At the very least, it's a good spot to aim for to get out of the car, stretch one's legs, and just look around at a nice small town.

From Franklin, it's north up US-31W to the Microtel Inn in Bowling Green. Hard to believe that Bowling Green doesn't have one of these fancy schmancy Yahoo Travel Guides yet when much smaller places like Cave City and Russell Springs do. But, then again, when has anything Yahoo done since about 1999 really made any sense?

Anyway, I was going to go all the way up to Cave City and spend the night at the Wigwam Village. But, I haven't been hearing or reading too many good things about it. And, with one's vacation time so liminted, I'm going to go out of my way to stay out of dirty places that might make me sick.

After what I hope will be a good night's sleep, it will be yet another odd route out of Bowling Green as I head east and then north. Towns of interest along this stretch will be little oddball places like Knob Lick, Black Gnat, Neatsville, Bourbon, and Honeybee. From there, the route gets northerly as I try to find the place where I lived in the late 1960's where I have most of my first memories. It's somewhere between Corbin and London, and very near the very first Colonel Sanders restaurant. A slight jog to the northeast comes next as it's out to Manchester to see the trailer park where I used to live as a very small boy. Yes, only a Kentuckian would go on vacation to visit a trailer park. ;)

And, from that point, it's north on US-421 to Richmond for the next place to get some sleep.

Well, after another long stretch of cities that don't have any Yahoo Travel Guides, it's time to pull into this Red Roof Inn in Richmond for the night. Frankly, without paying a left testicle, this seems to be about as good as it gets. Many, many years ago, I always used to stay in a Holday Inn here. I don't know what Holiday Inn got up its ass to start charging $90-$110 a night for one of their rooms that's barely better than a TraveLodge, but I sure won't pay it.

As I pull out of Richmond, I'm going to take the unconventional route out of town as to head into Lexington from the west. I'm going to take KY-169 out towards Nicholasville. This means that I will have to take the Valley View Ferry across the Kentucky River. This is the longest continuously running ferry service west of the Appalachians. Once into Nicholasville, I am taking an odd zig-zag route to hit several towns of interest including Nonesuch, Lawrenceburg, Terrapin, Bardstown, and Rooster Run. From there, I'll be heading north to a suburb south of Louisville called Okolona. There is where I lived in the early 70's and went to my first school.

After heading east out of Louisville on US-60, I eventually end up in the capital of the Commonwealth. This may sound stupid, but I'm looking forward to seeing the floral clock that adorns the grounds of the building. As for the insides of the building, I'd better stay out of there. As much as I love my home state, it has to have the most corrupt set of politicans other than Louisiana. I'd end up telling somebody off and getting hauled out of there.

After Frankfort, it's on to Versailles and then Lexington.

At this point in the construction of this "My Trip," this is getting way ahead of myself. I will come back and make a more proper notation later. For now, just know that I will be making two separate passes through Louisville. This one will be on my way back west as I travel (basically) along the Ohio River. Even when I was a kid, the Belle of Louisville was a source of great pride for the people of the city and we always looked forward to her race against the Delta Queen during Derby Week. I understand that her opponent may be different these days. I'm not sure if I will take the time to sail on her or if that will even be possible at the relatively late time I'll be getting into town. But, I certainly will go down there to see the old girl once again.

After having been away from many of these places for so many years, I don't know any longer which areas are cool and which have become infested with crime. This is especially true of the night I plan to spend in downtown Blytheville, Arkansas. Is that a pretty safe area, or would I be better off stopping short of there to stay at one of the motels close to the interstate at Osceola or Forrest City?
