My parents and my sister flew down from Pennsylvania to visit me here in Fort Worth. We had a great trip thanks in part to the suggestions I found on Yahoo Trip Planner. The Fort Worth Zoo was awesome. They did a good job of recreating each animal's natural environment. I gave Four Star Coffee Bar five stars. It was exactly what a coffee bar should be. If you like nature you'll love the Botanical Gardens, most of which is free. The Japanese Gardens charge a small fee but it's worth it. Angelo's had great food; however the portions left something to be desired. That night we hit the Stockyards and went to the rodeo at Cowtown Colliseum which was also a great time.
Day 2 we headed to Dallas where we checked out the Sixth Floor Museum at the Texas Book Depository Building and walked Dealey Plaza itself. We were able to walk the "grassy knoll" and see the wooden fence. This is a must see if you haven't been here before. So interesting we had to watch the movie JFK while Dealey Plaza was still fresh in our mind. The Texas State fair is huge, but pricey. Lots to do see and eat, but plan on large crowds while you're there.
Day three we revisited the Stockyards and ate at Cattlemen's Steak House which had great food and a western atmosphere.
On our last full day together we went for breakfast at Ol' South Pancake House in Fort Worth, which also had great food with a big selection to choose from.
We ended the trip with 4 tickets to Cowboy vs. Giants game where I proudly wore my Tiki Barber jersey to a game where my "G-Men" took it to the Cowboys. Sorry Dallas, maybe next year.
The Longhorn Cattle Drive reenactment at 11am and 4pm Daily was more than awesome. In Chisholm Trail Drive days, the herds from 1,000 to 4,000 head were a unreal way to cross the plains north of the Red River headed to Kansas' 3 railheads before the train arrived in Cowtown 1876. The Bull Ring, east of White Elephant Saloon, is a great treat in many ways. The restored old saloon has the largest indoor Dr. Pepper wooden sign above the bar which serves the coldest draft Bud in the Stockyards as well as Starbucks Coffees and Latees while you check out the 20 great paintings of the 1920-1930s Texas finest artist. Before you leave, sample the Best Strawberry Ice Cream, Won the 1st Prize several yrs, in Texas. It can't be bought in stores-try a sundae or a milk shake. This is one of the few places where you will find a rare beer- VERY RARE- is here. The "BB" or Bull's Butt beer is a real collector's item- sold here. The last of the old murders was in this saloon's at that time basement when a couple cowboys had a fight over a shuffle board game and one killed the other.
