A trip to a country with a history that is as rich as its ecology and geography. We aren't leaving until the winter, but begins the moment it is concieved; the planning can be as rewarding as the journey itself.

We will probably only have 5 days or so in country. Where should we go? What should we do? We want to skip the high end resorts; if we were looking lay on a beach and be pampered by friendly wait staff, we would go to Hawaii or some other place.

Isn't the purpose of travelling to a country outside the tourist mainstream to experience something interesting?

There is a place in Nicaragua where you can go zip lining through the forest, if that interests you. I can't remember the name of the place but it is definately worth looking into:)

I'm thinking about going on my own to Nicaragua...a little scary at my age, but I want to experience the country..have no idea of where or what to do as this is my first time...where is a fairly safe place for a single woman to start out in?

If this is your first trip alone to Nicaragua, I recommend you visit Granada. There're a lot of safe palces and you probably fall in love the city.

Nicaragua is a very nice country. The people are very friendly and the geography is very interesting. I went there for 3 weeks with a friend and his family.

We stayed in Managua. Didn't like the city. power and water was constantly going off. Granada was nicer. So was Leon. And San Juan del Sur.

The beaches are nice, but the can get old. We went to a canyon which you can float down in tubes. Pain to get there. Would suggest to adventure lovers.

I saw signs for canopy zip-lining, which looked fun.

Good luck to those of you who go!

For a single woman traveling alone I'd recommend to visit Granada and stay at the Alhambra Hotel which is located on the city square directly across from the Cathederal. They have a tourist service and can recommend many different tours for you to enjoy. There are many very good restaurants in the area; Tele Pizza and Jimmy Three Fingers just to name a few. The Alhambra also serves fine food.
