My husband and I went to Mackinac Island 25 years ago for our honeymoon when we were married on Aug. 28. We drove, camped out along the way, and stayed at a boarding house 2 nights on the island. We would have liked to have stayed at the Grand Hotel but we could not afford it. My husband has subscribed to the island newspaper for me..so I have kept up with events on the island all these years. We would love to go back to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could fly and spend our time on the island, rather than spending our time getting there? I would love to be able to splurge and stay at the Grand Hotel. We went there for an afternoon tea during our honeymoon. I would enjoy taking an afternoon tea there again and afterwards relaxing on their world famous long porch in a rocking chair and enjoying the view. And wouldn't a picnic lunch at the state park with a tour of Fort Mackinac be nice? And a horse drawn carriage tour around the island (no cars are allowed)? I would also like to see the exotic butterflies at Wings of Mackinac, a butterfly conservatory that I've read about in the Town Crier. And of course, no trip to the island would be complete without a visit to Ryba's Fudge Shop to indulge in their famous fudge and chocolate dipped strawberries. If time and money allowed, another pleasure I would like to experience would be a massage and pedicure at the Lilac Tree Spa downtown where flower baskets adorn the street poles and lilac trees scent the island. I will never forget my first sight of Mackinac Island as we arrived on the ferry 25 years ago--the view of the Queen Anne style cottages on the bluff as we approached was magnificent. I will always remember our honeymoon on this beautiful island. I felt like I had truly stepped back in time.
