San Francisco/California

A trip from July 30, 2006 to August 06, 2006, travelling to San Francisco, Tyrone, Yountville, Napa …
Alcatraz, SF Giants, Napa/Sonoma Valley, Yosemite, Santa Cruz … More
Alcatraz, SF Giants, Napa/Sonoma Valley, Yosemite, Santa Cruz, etc.
Must-have foods: Mission District burritos, California-style pizza, fresh sushi, Wine Country cheese, sourdough bread, Ghiridelli chocolate, and authentic Chinatown cuisine!
MSNBC ranked SF as one of the top 10 cities in the world for food. The 1849 Gold Rush may have given San Francisco its start, but what keeps people coming back to this hilly West Coast city is a different kind of treasure: a trove of top-notch menus showcasing multicultural cuisines, fresh California produce, and world-renowned chefs. The combination has created a feeding frenzy among the dining elite and dining options as diverse as the people who come to visit. Splurge on a plate of pistachio-crusted foie gras at the upscale Fleur de Lys, or sample some homemade tortillas at Mijita, where Iron Chef Traci Des Jardins serves authentic dishes her Mexican grandmother used to make. A trip to North Beach (San Fran’s Little Italy) and Chinatown may sound somewhat cliché, but for traditional pasta delights and the chance to experience the world’s second-largest Chinatown outside of Asia, there's no better place to let those taste buds wander.

Where else but in San Francisco will you find Snow White, Hillary Clinton, King Louis, Martha Stewart and a chorus line of dancing French poodles all sharing the same stage wearing hats the size of small zeppelins? Beach Blanket Babylon (678 Green St.; 415-421-4222), the longest running musical revue in American history, is currently celebrating its 30th zany year in the city and shows no signs of slowing down. While Snow White searches for her prince and the weapons of mass destruction, audiences howl at hilarious send-ups of world leaders, dubious celebrities and popular icons. It's worth the price of admission just to see diva Val Diamond belt out "San Francisco" wearing a hat containing the entire city skyline, complete with a moving cable car. Check it out at Club Fugazi in North Beach; shows are at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday (shows usually sell out; advance reservations can be made by calling or faxing the box office, or buying tickets online). Tickets range from $25-$65.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is a 15-ton, 13-foot-by-30-foot section of the Titanic's hull, a few shards of glass still left in its portholes.
The exhibit ends with a list of the dead and the survivors, giving visitors a chance to see how the passenger on their ticket fared.
Comments in the visitor's book were mostly glowing - "Awesome!" and "Enjoyed it sadly."

Notes
For the grand wineries shown in all the glossy travel magazines, head 50 miles north to Napa Valley, where nearly 300 winemaking facilities surround a 35-mile stretch of highway. In the heart of the valley, worthy impromptu stops along Highway 29 include the Hess Collection, Beringer, Sawyer Cellars and Mondavi vineyards. But a little advance planning affords big rewards. Make reservations to tour exclusive Opus One ($25 for tasting; 1144 Oakville Cross Rd., Oakville; 707-944-9442), a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothchild; hear your voice echo through the ambient old caves of Schramsberg (off Schramsberg Road, Calistoga; 800-877-3623); or indulge in the private luxury tasting at Swanson (1271 Manley Ln., Rutherford; 707-967-3500), where up to eight guests can snack on Dean & DeLuca cheeses and nibble on bonbons.

Notes
One of the liveliest streets in town, the Castro is practically synonymous with San Francisco's gay community (even though it is technically a street in the Noe Valley District). Located at the very end of Market Street, between 17th and 18th streets, the Castro has dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars catering to the gay community. Open-minded straight people are welcome, too.

Thing to Do
Notes
The Mexican and Latin American populations here, with their cuisine, traditions, and art, make the Mission District a vibrant area to visit. Some parts of the neighborhood are still poor and sprinkled with the homeless, gangs, and drug addicts, but young urbanites have also settled in the area, attracted by its "reasonably" (a relative term) priced rentals and endless oh-so-hot restaurants and bars that stretch from 16th and Valencia streets to 25th and Mission streets. Less adventurous tourists may just want to duck into Mission Dolores, cruise by a few of the 200-plus amazing murals, and head back downtown. But anyone who's interested in hanging with the hipsters and experiencing the hottest restaurant and bar nightlife should definitely beeline it here. Don't be afraid to visit this area, but do use caution at night.
