Switzerland in splendour

A trip from July 31, 2006 to August 11, 2006, travelling to Lausanne, Berne, Locarno, Martigny-Combe …
Take a personal, culturally amazing trip through Switzerland … More
Take a personal, culturally amazing trip through Switzerland, from skiing in the Swiss Alps to chatting over hot chocolate at a local pasterleria. Explore a small, elegant town like Neuchatel, and practice your French while learning about this beautiful, peaceful, spledid country. Walk the mountainous, lush and flowery regions of Biel and Bienne. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Alps, the majestic mountains and steep climb at Interlaken, and the beautiful vineyards as you travel by train. Take in the awe-inspiring view of the Chateau du Chillon situated on a shimmering lake in Montreaux. Stop at Rosengarten, overlooking the quaint grandeur of Berne. Shop at one of the many local market fairs, take a cruise, or enjoy fine dining and Swiss hospitality at one of the many fine restaurants and hotels. It may be chilly or sunny and pleasant, but bring a sweater and a jacket, or ski gear if you plan to visit the Alps.

For the seasoned traveler, the young adventurer, the pilgrim, the explorer, Switzerland has something for everyone. From ski-ing and hiking in the alps and hills, relaxing at a five-star hotel, discovering the flora and lush gardens, visiting the magnificent cathedrals and cities of spledid architecture such as Berne, Swiss wonders never cease. There are small towns to discover the abundance of culture, the hospitality, elegance, open-mindedness and genuine helpfullness of the Swiss, the multi-cultural background of the French, Italian, German, and Romanch speaking nation that has maintained its neutrality for years. There are castles, chateaus, and fine hotels and gourmet cuisine, deeply relaxing spas, glittering lakes, majestic mountains, acres of vineyards, and pristine parks as you travel the land by rail, bus, or car. There is luxurious, expensive Swiss watches, chocolate and other fine shopping, and roadside cafes, street fairs and market days. Enjoy Swiss Fondue at a local restaurant in Yverdon, or savor the Movenpick or ice-cream at the stalls by the Jet d'eau in Geneva. At every town in Switzerland, there is a beautiful, hospitable hotel where you can relax, indulge yourself and explore the neigboring cities or countryside. Far from the ordinary, every nuance of Switzerland is exciting, magnificent, and breath-taking, a journey for the classic and adventurous soul.

A eurail pass is the best way to see Switzerland. It gives you the option of stopping at any city or town, all of which are well connected by the Swiss Rail System. You may decide to stay the night, or to keep traveling. There funiculairs which take you to breath-taking observation points. There are also special scenic trains, some which go through the Alps and to Jungfrauh, the highest point in Europe. Montreaux has a special chocolate train and cheese tasting nearby. Staying with a host family, for younger adventurers, is also a good idea and can help you learn the language much more easily. Don't forget the quaint market places, the rich shopping centers, the picturesque parks and gardens, in addition to the grandeur of the landscape and history. I have found the Swiss people are friendly, open-mindend, kind, helpful, polite and altogether wonderful. I hope you enjoy your travel to Switzerland as much as I have. Bon voyage!

What are small towns in Switzerland where I can spend a night, or go trekking in the mountain? When are the festivals at these small towns? How do I participate in a youth cultural exchange or live with a local host family?

The average-priced hotels given are convieniently located and usually have spectacular views and spa package options. Many are chateaur or castles converted to hotels with modern-day Swiss hospitality. Some are located a few minutes from ski slopes and are mostly accessible by train.
When choosing a Eurail pass there are a variety of options including a Swiss pass ($622 for one month) which includes rail, lake steamers and city transportation, or a France-Switzerland or Austria-Switzerland pass, which allows you to travel to these marvelous and beautiful neighboring lands, often over the Alps. My favourite scenic trains are the Chocolate Train from Montreaux, the GoldenPass, and the Glacier Express. Other rail/hotel packages are available at http://www.raileurope.com

We are a middle aged couple living in Texas, USA. We will be on a company sponsored group trip to St Moritz & Lucerne in July. We will be flying into and out of Zurich most likely. We will be in each of those two cities for 3 days/nights each. We would like to extend our trip for 2 or 3 days before going back to U.S. Any ideas on what might be interesting and fun for those extra days? Should we tour Switzerland by train or car? Should we do a side trip to Germany, Austriea, etc.? thanks
