How difficult to drive a car there?
Hard to read signs though, but most signs will also have latin type characters. If you know any greek letters at all (like from frats or sororities), you'll actually begin picking it up. Kappa, Lambda, Phi, Alpha, Beta.
Driving is tough. But definitely go for it to go outside of Athens. Don't drive in athens. Santorini, drive if you are staying outside of Fira or Oia. Zakynthos, drive. Driving in Greece is easier than Spain. Still, all sticks unless you want to pay more. And the cheeper rental cars are so tiny and wimpy that have a hard time up steep hills.
My stompin grounds are the villages of Vasilicos, around the mountains, just before Yerakas beach. Beautifull. I intend to go back when spring time comes. I also have been to the Island of Kefalonia, a gorgeous place. Only 37 Euros to make the trip. You sail to the Pasada dock yard. The population is 40,000 native Greeks an some Albanians. Worth your trip in 2007, mark my word, A fellow I know did the guide an his name well you'll find out. He is a great fellow.
I know some Greek to to say hello. Please/thanks. however the language isn't that simple. Some effort is required.
I learned it 20 years past. I got also 2 job prospects and so I go there in April to give it a try. I was there for 2 months. To short for me I tell ya. Did some work to keep my place with my sister, and her husband John.
to Zante' and also to Kefalonia, go you'll never regret your time. I took delight in the visit.
Next year I expect to remain there for at least 9 months to work and help folks to get to know Zakynthos, and Kefalonia, also go to Olympia if you got time, from st hand experience
