Wupatki National Monument

Flagstaff, AZ 86004
United States
Mon Sep 18 6:00am - Mon Sep 18 11:00pm
Notes
Wupatki National Monument is one of several sites preserving pueblos (houses) of ancient peoples, but unlike the Tonto, Montezuma, Casa Grande and Tuzigoot Monuments where there is only one main building, here there are many ruins scattered over a large area of desert northeast of Flagstaff. The pueblos all have a distinctive red colour and were made from the local Moenkopi sandstone. Wupatki is reached by the same loop road that passes the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, adjoining the main north-south route US 89 - there is a single admission charge (just $5 per car in 2004) for both parks.

Thing to Do
Mon Sep 18 6:00am - Mon Sep 18 12:00pm
Notes
There is much left of old Route 66 in Flagstaff, in fact the city takes pride in its Route 66 heritage. A few years back Flagstaff changed the name of its main street, Santa Fe Ave, back to Route 66. Old cafes, motor courts, and the colorful downtown district all show evidence of the impact Route 66 had on this town. The Museum Club is a Flagstaff landmark that harkens back to Route 66. Once located on the outskirts of town, this old highway watering hole is a Route 66 throwback now surrounded by present day Flagstaff.

Winslow was founded as a railroad division terminal in the early 1880's along the 35th parallel or Beale's Camel Road. It became a favorite stopping place on Route 66 during its heyday. The La Posada Hotel, a Harvey House built in 1930, provided fine cuisine and elegant lodging for the road weary traveler and railroad passenger alike. Bits and pieces of Route 66 can still be found throughout the town.

Location
South of Flagstaff. Arizona State Highway 89A between Flagstaff and Sedona passes through Oak Creek Canyon and the Coconino National Forest.

Oak Creek Canyon is very scenic, but due to its popularity the relatively narrow, winding road through the Canyon is often congested.
At the northern, upper end of the canyon there is an excellent National Forest Service scenic overlook with a large parking area. This provides an excellent view of the canyon.

1. Red Rock Country (Sedona, Ariz.)
Ever since the early days of movies, when Hollywood has wanted to show the unique beauty of the West, it has gone to Sedona, a place that looks like nowhere else. Beginning with The Call of the Canyon in 1923, some hundred movies and TV shows have been filmed in and around town. We fell under Sedona's spell, too, and while debating our No. 1 spot kept returning to it for the same reasons Hollywood does: The area's telegenic canyons, wind-shaped buttes and dramatic sandstone towers embody the rugged character of the West -- and the central place that character holds in our national identity. There's a timelessness about these ancient rocks that fires the imagination of all who encounter them. Some 11,000 years before film cameras discovered Sedona, American Indians settled the area. Homesteaders, artists and, most recently, New Age spiritualists have followed. Many cultures and agendas abound, but there's really only one attraction: the sheer, exuberant beauty of the place. People come for inspiration and renewal, tawny cliffs rising from the buff desert floor, wind singing through box canyons, and sunsets that seem to cause the ancient buttes and spires to glow from within. We hear the canyon's call and cannot resist.

The Chapel is reached from Uptown Sedona by taking 179 south and proceeding to Chapel Rd. where you go left and drive to the end of the road. On our visit a guide directed us up the hill to the parking lot. There is a steep climb from the parking area so use caution and wear comfortable shoes. There is a parking area at the top for the physically challenged. The Chapel is open from 9am to 5pm daily and closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday and Easter. There is a downstairs gift shop that is not to be missed- unique religious articles including a large selection of unusual crosses and rosaries of native stones.
