I am planning on driving to Portland, OR from the Bay Area on June 15, 2006 with a friend and will allow myself about a week. Any advice on scenic routes or areas of interest between those two locations would be greatly appreciated. Emphasis on things which don't require lots of money :)

Depending on your preferences; the coast (Hwy101) is very beautiful or mountains take I-80 to Hwy 89 and head North, follow 89 along backside of the Sierra and past Mt Shasta where you'll intersect I-5, at Weed take Hwy 97 North all the way along the backside of Cascades through Bend and up to Madras, OR. From there you can cut arcross to Portland (not sure of the Hwy). There are many beautiful viewpoints along the way either option.

I do this trip twice a year. Spring and summer take the scenic routes. Winter time stay on the main highways and carry chains. All seasons this is a wonderful trip. Enjoy and explore. There is alot to see and take in.
