My first trip to New York was memorable for many reasons, you can see a lot in a day and even the danger excites, as this city with a constant edge that pulses with life energy and noise ! I was in town for a good friends Wedding and had a great deal at the Waldorf Astoria with two other guests, Carter and Hal. The three of us split the cost of the room that worked out to around $65 per night. Stepping out for the first time in New York and man was I energized ! First stop, Times Square for the best Burger ever, NY style, the street people are everywhere with their hands out for money, I pass them a cigarette or a stick of gum it gets them to smile at least !
Someone inquired about reasonable accommodations in NYC that are centrally located. There really aren't any, lol. I did quite a lot of research and I did find a few hostels. This means you would be in a room with as few as 3 or as many as 10 people and share a bathroom.
The best one I found was the Gershwin. You can google the site. It has a website where you can see exactly what you are going to get... which is a big selling point... right? The beds are from like $40-200 a night, depending on the level of privacy and the amenities you will require. $40 will get you a bunk bed, in a room of 10 people with a shared bathroom in the room. If this doesn't work for you, then prepare to pay more... lots more. Red Roof in Manhattan(a step up from Motel 6) is around $229 a night for a single.
Well you could get on the train and get off at like every stop to do all this but you wouldn't get the full effect of NYC... And who the hell wants to stay in NY for one day?? P.S. you can take that good old (free) ride on the Staten Island ferry!! =]
Can anyone recommend a safe, reasonably-priced, centrally located hotel/motel/inn, etc. for a female traveler to New York. I would like to go over a Friday-Monday first time trip, and am a little timid going there alone. Thanks.
I love new york, this sounds pretty cool. i would have to include shopping on fifth, and maybe the statue of liberty, but you would need another day for those, i don't know if you are even allowed to go up the statue of liberty anymore. If not, it would be a bummer!
I was born and raised in NYC, so I could never be seen as a "tourist", with my obvious attitude of a typical New Yorker. I will say that there is alot to see and do, making it a great place to visit, but expensive to visit as well as live.
This is great.. at least i have now an idea what will be my trip like before going to New York. .Thanks for sharing this very nice idea.. I'm planning to visit NY this FALL.......
I really don't know how you are going to get all that done in 24 hours and within the time frame of all the parks and museums! Plus there is also transportation, and traffic but its good to dream!
Even if one day is enough time, one can't appreciate and enjoy what there is to see in such a short time. And what about the Met?I didn't see it mentioned...

Good luck, and I hope this was helpful.
