"Saint Patrick is reported to have driven all of the snakes, a pagan symbol, out of Ireland and into the sea where they drowned. This is perhaps a metaphor for driving paganism out of Ireland since biologists believe there were no snakes in Ireland at the time."
If you would like to see some of the remnants of the celtic and pagan traditions (the snakes, so to speak), I would suggest you visit the Dingle Peninsula in southwestern Ireland. There are over 2,000 archeological sites in that one stretch of land and it remains one of the few Irish Gaelic-speaking areas in modern Ireland. Be sure to visit Dingle, Mt Brandon, Conor Pass, Slea Head, and the Blasket Islands.
