I would not go to Tsukiji on Sunday, as the fish market is closed on Sunday so as all the shops. Tsukiji is walking distance from Ginza, so it might be a good idea to go Tsukiji before Ginza. Also, Asakusa Shrine is not in this plan. I definately put that after visiting Ueno park, as you can take a subway from Ueno to Asakusa.

I never been to Japan before. Would this be a good first time trip?

It would be a good first trip...but it probably wouldn't be a good ONLY trip. It's a fairly exhaustive Tokyo experience, but you want to see Kyoto and Mt. Fuji and some of the other sights as well.

videoleslie, the trip title does say "Tokyo"... although I agree that the Kyoto-Nara-Osaka area, and Nagoya, all rate a look. I also loved Shinagawa, as well as the Imperial Palace grounds for cherry blossom viewing, and Yokohama for the Ramen Museum and shops!

One tidbit not mentioned: don't limit your experience to places above ground. Tokyo Station (and other major stations) are cities in themselves, with miles of underground passages and corridors filled with shops and restaurants!

I personally have never been to Japan, but I have a friend who is from there, but now lives in NYC. He and is partner went to Japan in October. My friend's partner (who is American) fell in love with Japan. He said it was a wonderful experience and wants to go back. I hope to visit Japan someday as well.

Where is Shinjuku on this iternary? Make sure you visit Shinjuku-the train stop is the busiest in the world. You will marvel at the hustle-and I grew up in New York City! It is exhausting, and I didn't get to Kyoto or Mt. Fuji, but I'm going back again next year. Save Ginza for last...it's very touristy. Hara Juku(right next to the Meiji Shrine) and Shibuya are a must. If you use chopsticks instead of asking for a knife and fork, you will win cool points with the Japanese.

Although I lived there for a year and had more time on my hands to explore Japan, you'll want to make sure to save a day to take the train up to Nikko National Park. It's full of shrines and structures that are hundreds of years old on land once owned by the Tokugawa shogunate - beautiful if you can get up to see it! Enjoy your trip!
