Best of Thailand in 10 Days

A trip to Lak si Khwaeng, Sukhothai, Suhkothai …

I pieced together my favorite spots in Thailand for a first-time visitor with limited time. I mixed the high country of Chiang Mai, the beaches of Krabi, the bustle of Bangkok, and the history of Sukhothai to cover as many of the facets of Thailand as reasonably possible in 10 days.

Talk about this trip (10)
very nice, I will be in Thailand in January and may stop by Sukhothai on the way to Chiang Mai.

it's not a tour guys, it's just a suggested itinerary
it is easy to find cheap transportation between cities and cheap accomodations once you get there
an itinerary like this makes you work a bit to find your own way around, but in Thailand this is actually possible with a little effort and very little coin

If you're going to be in Bangkok, I would also make sure you make time to see a Muay Thai match. It's interesting to watch the opening ceremony for each match and they have live musicians who play according to how the fight is going. Also, I think it's also worth a stop by the MBK mall. You can compare and contrast Thai malls vs. malls at home while finding some good deals. Locals go to the mall, so what better place to go to see locals hanging out?

I'm curious about the method of travel used between the cities? Chiang Mai is all the way to the North, while Krabi is in the South. While plane travel is available, the costs add up...Otherwise, I like the itinerary. I would imagine that the in-country cost for the trip, including airfare (BKK to Sukhothai, Chiang Mai to Krabi, Krabi to BKK), bus fare (Sukhothai to BKK), hotels and meals, would cost somewhere in the region of US$2500-3000 for two. If one stays more in less expensive digs, with bus travel rather than plane, then the cost drops to about US$1000. Airfare from the US to BKK is about $900 RT per person, though that can drop to close to $600 in the off-season.

thailand is very cheap. you can stay a night for 100-150 bhat wich is 2-3 euro. food is also extremely good and cheap, a full meal is about 1-2 euro. transportation in bangkok with taximeter is extremely cheap.. no matter how far you go you wont come over 100 bhat... often we gave the taxi driver 100bhat for a 1/2hour drive through the whole city.. actually we would have paid 50bhat.
tuk tuks are a cool way to travel if you know where to go and the driver knows too, but often much more expensive than taxis with taximeters.
