Mon 06/17/13 (day 1) - New Orleans

Average Rating (451):

City
New Orleans
New Orleans, LA, United States
Mon Jun 17 2:00pm - Wed Jun 19 7:00am
Notes
We will leave Atlanta and head straight for New Orleans. There are some wonderful Southern cities in between (such as Memphis, Tennessee, cities in the Mississppi River Delta, and of course cities where my family is in Arkansas), but those cities are nice, short weekend trips from Atlanta. We can do them at another time.
I think you would really love to see New Orleans, and its combined French and African traditions. A great start to the trip, I think.

Average Rating (92):

City
Austin
Austin, TX, United States

Notes
Ignore the map, New Orleans, and Austin are not Southern cities. Culturally those cities are distinctly different. In New Orleans there are European, Native American, and African traditions; in Austin, the influences are Native American and Mexican influenced. The meshing of these different cultures make these cities very different from the rest of the sout, and especially the southeast region.

I have been to Houston, Texas, but not Austin. I have heard great things about it, and there are lots of historical sites here.

Notes
This is the home of the Redwood National Forest. My dream place to visit. I absolutely love trees. I grew up in an area of Atlanta where development came through quickly. There were beautiful tress one minute, and poorly constructed, cookie cutter houses the next minute. These repeated events burned in my mind. And most of all, I would cry for the trees. I would hate that people thought we needed these ugly (already delapodated) houses, instead of those trees. So, I made it a life goal to see the mighty Redwood Trees. Trees that have stood for thousands of years. Trees taller than I can imagine. It will be quite emotional for me. I think you will enjoy it too. You, through your job, have a relationship with trees too.
