Boudin Bakery at Fisherman's Wharf

Boudin has been making sourdough since 1849, when the Boudin family recipe came into being. Sourdough bread is a perfect collusion between a yeast and a bacterium, producing the bread we've come to associate with San Francisco.

Boudin offers a museum and tour through the baking process, as well as a demonstration bakery window where you can watch bakers in action.

Take a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge: Only fog can spoil the magnificent views from the deck of this engineering masterpiece. Many people drive across the bridge without being able to savor the views. Board buses #28 or #29, either of which stops right at the bridge toll plaza

Musee Mecanique at Fisherman's Wharf

Rajah Tells All is an arcade game at the Musee Mecanique, which houses a privately-owned collection of antique arcade games and musical instruments. Some of the mechanical attractions come from Playland at the Beach, a piece of San Francisco history. Others come from around the world.

The Musee Mecanique feels like an arcade and not a museum. It's a fun place to take the kids, and also a great place to grab a piece of nostalgia among the collectibles.

How Long: Allow a half hour at most to watch the people and take a few photos, longer if you want to drive down on a busy day
Best Time to Visit: The flowers are nicest in spring and summer, and morning is the best time for photographsThe "crooked" section of Lombard is between Hyde and Leavenworth, just a few blocks above Ghirardelli Square.

The Powell-Hyde cable car stops at the top of Lombard Street. You can also get there by walking up Hyde (very steep) from Ghirardelli Square, up Leavenworth (one block east, less steep) or by walking west from North Beach on Lombard Street, but the best way to get here depends on where you're coming from. Check out all the other options.

If you plan on driving, approach from Hyde Street. Lombard Street is one-way, and you can't drive up from Leavenworth.
