No more, "Let's wait until next year." No more, "it's too expensive or too crowded or too whatever." NO MORE EXCUSES! The time has come for me to stop dreaming my dreams and start living. Ready or not Europe, hear I come!
this trip looks awesome. hope you have a blast. My wife and I are going to Europe next year for our 10 year anniversery. We also want to ride a train from Paris to Interlaken. Do you know if there is an overnight train avaliable for this? thanks.
Hey Burnsey23, Thanks for your comment any & all feedback is always appreciated!! Even though it seems so close, I must admit this month seems to be dragging already. Almost there, almost there... I'm sure there is a night train from Paris to Interlaken, I just don't know which would be the cheapest option for you. I will tell you this, for our tickets I went with the SBB website (Swiss Rail) to book our Paris - Interlaken (via Basel) leg. For both of us including bank fees, taxes, and reservations it cost us about $100 per person. I don't know if that is good or not (as I hear the Swiss Rail is pricey) but for our day trip it fit into our schedule perfectly. For your overnight trip, I honestly do not know what is best, maybe try SNCF (French Rail) and SBB and use that as your starting point. Hope this Helps and Happy Travels, Bobby
Bobby, I cannot tell you how excited I am reading through your day by day and seeing all of the things that you are going to do!!! This is an absolutely amazing trip and I am so proud of you – your planning is flawless and the fact that you get to do so much of this trip on reward points is such an inspiring lesson for me!! Midsummer at the Globe and opening night for Madam Butterfly!! These are once in a lifetime..in fact all of this is! I am so excited for you that you are going to Neuschwanstein! If I could do my big Europe trip all over I would totally steal your plans (well except I would be staying at the Four Seasons and the Ritz with Jenny Jones, but we would let you come and hang in our lobbies ;) ) I can’t wait for you to see Venice, Rome, London, Paris, and the Swiss Alps will be the most beautiful place you have ever seen. Can’t wait for you to tell me all about Munich and your hang gliding…all of it!!! You only live once, and this IS a dream come true, so do whatever you want when you get there, whatever makes you happy! and if you come home broke, just know the memories you will have will last a lifetime; their value is golden. Have fun, be safe and we can’t wait for the 3000 shot slideshow on your return!! (For my praise and priceless words of wisdom..please elevate me to better-than-crappy souvenir. ) Love ya! Jen
Wow, Reading through the comments I must say I am totally taken back!!! This trip means a lot to me but to share it with family and now also with some new friends makes it even more so. JCPC & Cindy, thanks for your suggestions- they sound exciting, affordable & innovative (never really thought about the top of Eiffel Tower at night- will look into it)! But to Jen, I must say what you wrote really touched me. Not in that creepy, scary, "let me buy you a drink" way but in a sentimental, brotherly, heart-warming kind of way. I did have tacos for dinner last night so it could just be heart-burn but I think it's what you wrote. You talk about inspiration and it’s funny because when I think about my inspiration for this trip I think about you! I'd always admired your ability not only to chase after your dreams but to actualize them, making them a reality. I've never seen another person get what they want more than you and I can honestly say it is not due to luck, circumstance or through any special favors but from true hard work and sheer determination (I guess that's why you're up in a room and I'm stuck in your "lobbies"). Seriously though, dear sister, you are truly a go-getter, a natural leader and if I could do half of what you've already done in my whole, entire lifetime it would be a pretty, damn good life. You're the best! Happy Travels, Bobby P.S. - You're officially upgraded to higher level status in souvenir quality. (I see a new Big Ben Shot Glass in your future!!!!)
I went to Paris, London & Scotland last year (all within one week)! Paris was my favorite part of the trip and just so amazing...I really want to go back! My favorite things that we did while in Paris were taking a bike tour the day we got in (we rode our bikes all around Paris, had a tour guide and got to go on a boat ride down the Sienne River after if got dark, with wine, to end it). We also took a day and went to Versailles - if you go, note that the palace is actually closed on Mondays, but you can still go to the gardens.
And my last, most memorable part of our trip, was buying a bottle of wine for me and my friends to share and sitting on the steps of Sacre Couer to watch the sun set. Breath takingly amazing. I hope you enjoy your trip - it sounds completely amazing! I'm sure you're getting even more excited now that it's getting so close! -Abby
Lido is a ways out, and vaporetto rides into Venice proper add up. That said, it's the only place in town for night life, and it's still better than staying in Mestre. I don't know about the Festa della Sensa, but I've been to Venice during Biennale/Redentore. Venice is always crowded, so the only real difference I noticed were crowds in neighborhoods where you usually wouldn't find them, and crowds at night (Venice is typically a ghost town at night, aside from a handful of squares). Have a great time!
Boy, you sure did a lot of planning before leaving! I seem to do pretty well in Europe with just the opposite. I have done several trips there with just very basic planning of a one or two month Eurail Pass, know the main places I want to go to, and then just go and wing it. Easier to do if you are just by yourself, but I have had so much fun that way. Have you looked into the Eurail passes for some of that train travel you want to do. You can really save money with those passes by buying them in North America. I have bought them and got great help from Hosteling International. The rail passes are available in several different packages, depending on how many days of travel you need in that time, and a day punch is good for a 24 hour period, no matter how long the train trip is that day. If you go with single train reservations, there are some really good deals booking a long time in advance, but the ticket has to be used on the day you booked it for. If your off by a day, I think you loose the ticket. At least that is how they do it in the UK, and if you know the exact day, you can get some really inexpensive train tickets. Also, a warning! The European low cost airlines like Easy Jet dont let you bring hardly ANY luggage without paying quite a lot extra in fees! Double check their luggage allowances and then do the conversion from Kilograms to pounds and weigh your luggage now. I once had a super cheap airfare to Scotland, but I had some camping gear and when it was figured out how much they would charge for my luggage weight, I ended up just not using the air tickets and bought train tickets... it was cheaper by quite a bit! And more scenic. Finally, if something goes wrong and you somehow get off your schedule, don't worry, some amazing things might happen with your new route! All the walking tours and gondola rides don't need any prebooking. You can just show up in any major European city and have a choice of several walking tours each and every day. Look online for a glance of what is out there. RIding bikes is a great way to explore Europe. I just spent today, Sunday, riding a bike all over the Englisher Garten here in München. If you can, rent some bikes and have a picnic in this beautiful park. One of THE best urban parks on the planet! You can rent bikes at many bicycle rental shops in the cities of Europe, but here in Germany you can also rent them on an as needed basis through a great set up by DieBahn, the German train company. They leave bikes with special electronic locks all over the cities, and you just call a number and start renting the available bike for as long or as short of a time that you need it. Well, I wrote way more than I thought I was going to, so.... Bon Voyage!
