South of the shopping centre is La Canebière, which is to Marseille what the Champs Elysées is to Paris. Combined with rue Ferréol, rue de Rome and rue de Paradis, they make up the major shopping area in the city and include local and national designer stores. Rue de la Tour is your best bet for serious designer luxury, including chic evening wear at Diable Noir. If you want smaller shops then head to the Cours Julien area which has built up a reputation as an alternative, bohemian quarter. The area is also great for food and antique markets at weekends. Le Panier, Marseille's oldest neighbourhood, is the best place for local produce. Rue des Petits Puits and places des Pistoles are good streets for Provencal pottery and shops selling lavender soap and olive based goodies. La Maison de Pastis, with 65 different pastis and absinthes as well as a tasting room, is worth stumbling across and then out of.

Looks very nice. Around $1,000 per night.
The service was impeccable. Someone greeted us at the door and brought us right up to the checkin which was past the lobby and restaurants, out of the way of incoming traffic. We were checked in quickly and brought to our rooms by someone at the front desk. We stayed in a park deluxe room which was very spacious with a huge closet and bathroom too. The bathroom had double sinks and the toilet was closed off from the rest of the bathroom which was nice. It is a very modern hotel but still had plenty of traditional aspects to it. However, if you want totally French traditional it may not be for you. Everything from the rooms to the lobby was very clean. They were renovating the spa and their upper end suites and I got to see a sample and they were amazing. The noise was minimal and nonexistent on weekends. This will all be completed by June 1, 2007. If you have an AMEX platinum card you get extra fringe benefits booking through them. The location is great too, right off Plaza Vendome, easy walking distance to the Louvre and the Opera and close to numerous metro lines. I stayed in 4 hotels on my trip, all nice but this was the best! Ask about connecting rooms for families. When renovations are done they will also have some 2bedroom suites.

I loved my stay at Hyatt Regency Paris Madeleine. From the moment you step in to the moment you check out, the service is wonderful. Checking in was a breeze. The staff are polite and helpful, even helping me to find a wine shop and supermarket in the area. I had a beautiful room (double) with a balcony facing the street. I took dinner out there one afternoon and it was like having a cafe at your doorstep. The bed was super comfortable. And the bathroom was roomy. Closely located to two metro station, Madeleine and St. Augustine, it is so easy to get around from the hotel. Furthermore, the hotel is a walking distance from Galeries Lafayette and La Madeleine, and three bus stops away from Ave des Champs Elysees. If you have trouble finding the place you need to go, just ask the staff. They are more that happy to help you. Overall, an excellent hotel to stay in and worth the money you put down.
