City
San Juan, PR, Puerto Rico
Fri Nov 6 5:00pm - Sun Nov 8 2:00pm
Notes
Founded in 1521 by Ponce de León, the capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, is the oldest city in US territory. Home to 1.6 million (more than a third of the island's citizens), it is also the heart of Puerto Rican tourism. What draws travellers here year-round are miles of smooth, clean beaches, a wide range of accommodation, fabulous restaurants and, of course, Old San Juan, whose beautifully restored historic sights surrounded by crashing turquoise surf are reason enough to make a trip to Puerto Rico.

Along with Old San Juan, resort-filled Condado is the most popular neighbourhood for visitors thanks to its excellent beachfront and fine boutiques, and these two sections of the capital share the highest concentration of restaurants and lodging options. There's also much to explore as the city extends to the south and east, including the beachfront neighbourhoods of Ocean Park and Isla Verde; up-and-coming Santurce with its numerous art galleries; the financial district of Hato Rey; and the college-town vibe in Rio Piedras.

Within just a couple hours' drive from San Juan are Puerto Rico's rarest natural resources and some of the best beaches and coral reefs in the Caribbean. The El Yunque rainforest, Luquillo Beach and the Rio Camuy Cave Park all make excellent day trips.

Immersing yourself in Puerto Rico's rich history is easy, just head to the center of Old San Juan - here you'll find the remains of the original city. Founded in 1521, it is now a U.S. Historic Zone, complete with over 400 remarkably preserved buildings dating back to the city's inception. Exquisite examples of 16th and 17th century architecture abound in Old San Juan Puerto Rico, as do aging stone walkways that occasionally become so narrow they barely seem traversable, small gardens outfitted with tropical plants and so many attractions, shops and cafes it will surely take you more than a single day to see.

The original city walls still tower in the background, and if you follow them long enough you'll reach El Morro. Overlooking the sea from the northwestern tip of San Juan, this massive fort is truly a sight to behold. A winding maze of dungeons, towers and an impressive system of tunnels, this was once the center of the Spanish occupation of Puerto Rico - now it is one of the most important Old San Juan attractions, tracing the history of the city, the fort and its people. And El Morro isn't even the biggest fort in Old San Juan Puerto Rico - there's also Fuerte San Cristobal. While El Morro's job was to defend from sea attacks, San Cristobal was there to defend against those wishing to attack by land.

Another of the great Old San Juan attractions is La Fortaleza. On a scenic hill overlooking the harbor, this is another former fort, though this was long ago converted into the official residence of Puerto Rico's governor. Armaments were gradually replaced with medieval-looking towers, stained glass masterpieces and opulent decorations reminiscent of Renaissance Europe. Everywhere you look now is marble, mahogany and bright artwork.

Though most of Old San Juan reminds you of the city's history as a military stronghold, many of these structures have been reworked for the tourist industry. The former barracks now hold the Museo de Las Americas, which focuses on Latin American folk art. Religious structures are also widespread throughout Old San Juan Puerto Rico. The San Juan Cathedral is a mishmash of Gothic and modern architecture, owing to its constant renovations since the church's opening in 1540. Also on the list of Old San Juan attractions is the Dominican Convent, a perfectly restored building that was once the city's main shelter in times of attack, and is now the home to a wide array of religious documents and artwork.

Take a walk down Paseo de la Princesa and you'll see a wondrous fountain, an old prison, and what remains of the original city gate. You'll also come across Plaza de Armas, the original main square of Old San Juan Puerto Rico. This is where the Alcadia is, a city hall that took over a century to complete and was made to replicate the city hall in Madrid. The towers, balconies and courtyards were designed to remind colonists of the land they left behind.

No matter where you start your trek through Old San Juan, there is plenty to see and do - this is, after all, Puerto Rico's number one tourist attraction. A trip right into the heart of 16th century island life, the cracked city walls and expert Spanish architecture present the city as it used to be - one of the most important cultural landmarks in all of the Caribbean.

For over 100 years the scent of rich tazas and mallorcas (kind of like a flattened Danish with melted butter inside, powdered sugar outside) has been luring locals and tourists alike past the front window display case, and through its doors. Though often crowded, it is well worth a trip both for breakfast and lunch or dinner. Homestyle Puerto Rican cuisine featuring asopao, a gumbo/stew that is the local soul food, rice with squid, flans and pies are a delight to the palate and easy on the wallet.

This huge fortress, begun in 1634 and reengineered in the 1770s, is one of the largest ever built in the Americas by Spain. Its walls rise more than 150 feet (45m) above the sea -- a marvel of military engineering. San Cristóbal protected San Juan against attackers coming by land as a partner to El Morro, to which it is linked by a half-mile (.8km) of monumental walls and bastions filled with cannon-firing positions. A complex system of tunnels and dry moats connects the center of San Cristóbal to its "outworks," defensive elements arranged layer after layer over a 27-acre (11-hectare) site. You'll get the idea if you look at the scale model on display. Like El Morro, the fort is administered and maintained by the U.S. National Park Service. Be sure to see the Garita del Diablo (the Devil's Sentry Box), one of the oldest parts of San Cristóbal's defenses, and famous in Puerto Rican legend. The devil himself, it is said, would snatch away sentinels at this lonely post at the edge of the sea. In 1898 the first shots of the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico were fired by cannons on top of San Cristóbal during an artillery duel with a U.S. Navy fleet. Sometimes park rangers lead hour-long tours for free, and you can also visit on your own.

Paseo de la Princesa skirts the curved walls of the old city, greeting tourists with shops, cafes and a delicate fountain along its shoreline path. One of the most pleasant San Juan attractions, the street is a nice way to take in the Caribbean sun on an afternoon stroll. Lined with flowers, statues, palm trees and all sorts of things you'd expect on a stylish little street, Paseo de La Princesa connects the port to the city gate.

From the path laid out by Paseo de la Princesa, Old San Juan shines. The promenade is home to a large number of cultural events, and a wealth of people enjoying the midday ritual of a glass of Piragua, a tasty mix of ice and tropical fruit syrups. You definitely won't be the only person drinking one.

Paseo de la Princesa Old San Juan offers views of nearby Isla de Cabras, an old Spanish prison, and the fountain that marks the street's end. The prison which lends the street its name, is now home to Puerto Rico's tourism headquarters. But the imposing fortress walls that line the street seem unchanged since the day they were constructed. Much like the nearby El Morro and the most popular San Juan attractions, this street is steeped in the city's colonial history, with its 1600s architecture fully preserved.

Another of the San Juan attractions found on Paseo de la Princesa is the Racies/Roots Fountain. Full of bronze statues celebrating the city's rich cultural heritage, it's often the stopping point for couples and/or partiers, (depending on the time of night). The terraced decks nearby are perfect to take in the ever-changing San Juan scene, and are often the site of musical performances throughout the week. Another attraction along the pathway is one of the original six gated passageways, known as the Puerta de San Juan - of the six, it's the only one remaining.

The Paseo de la Princesa has become such a staple of tourism in San Juan that the promenade has been further developed in the past ten years, offering wondrous looks of El Morro and panoramic views of the port, rocky cliffs and the rest of the city. But it's the original half of the pathway tracing the old city walls that brings in the majority of tourists. Of all the attractions in the Old San Juan, this is one of the most visited spots because what you see changes with the time of the day. Whether it's the sunset performances, sun-drenched views or midnight strolls that you are looking for, the Paseo de la Princesa is a great place to get acquainted with the city of San Juan.

This is the oldest church in San Juan, originally a mission. Built in the 16th century, I believe, it is quite possibly one of the most plain cathedrals you will ever see. The overwhelming simplcity of it is probably the same reason that it's so remarkable. You don't need to spend exhorbitant amounts of time in here, as it's nothing as ornate as European cathedrals.

A favorite stop for tourists, this marvelous cathedral was built in 1592, on the same site of the previous cathedral that was destroyed by a hurricane around 1584. Located on Calle Cristo, this gothic and neoclassical structure is situated in front of the historic Hotel El Convento in the heart of Old San Juan, and the Plazuela de Las Monjas. Besides the cathedral's religious significance, history buffs can view the relics of Ponce de León that are preserved here in a marble crypt.

A Whirlwind Tour of St. Thomas

Are you anxious to see all 32 square miles of this lush tropical paradise? If so, you can either rent a car or take a guided tour. Whatever you do, your explorations will take you up winding hills and along mountainous roadways where it’s guaranteed each breathtaking panorama is more dramatic than the one before. A particularly famous stop is Drake's Seat — the vantage point where Sir Francis Drake himself used to sit and observe his fleet.

Just below Drake's Seat is Magens Bay Beach, USVI , touted by National Geographic Magazine as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

To the west of Drake’s Seat, another “must see” is MountainTop. Looming 1,500 feet above sea level, this festive shopping complex offers unparalleled vistas showcasing the US and British Virgin Islands. By the way, it’s also home to the World Famous Banana Daiquiri — made exclusively with Cruzan Rum of the Virgin Islands. A well-known attraction on the other side of town is Paradise Point. At this aptly named attraction, you can take a state-of-the-art tramway 700 feet to look out over Charlotte Amalie Harbor and beyond.

On St. Thomas you will find everything from premiere hotels and quaint guesthouses to one-of-a-kind watering holes and fine dining restaurants featuring international cuisine. St. Thomas also has a spectacular 18-hole golf course, a marine park, several tennis facilities, boats for charter, and even a bowling center. Historical sites are plentiful, too. The Visitors' Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce have plenty of flyers, maps and brochures on hand to keep you up-to-date with island attractions and activities.
