Summer Vacation #2
Coastal Maine
Breathtaking coastal scenery, broad beaches of pure white sand, and quaint, picturesque New England villages mark the Southern Maine Coast. This Maine includes the historic coastal towns of Kittery, The Yorks, Wells, Ogunquit, The Kennebunks, and Old Orchard Beach. Feast on lobster in the rough or dine at one of the many fine restaurants or inns; explore classic lighthouses, secluded harbors and rocky shorelines, or shop at the Kittery Outlets, antique shops or local boutiques. Four seasons of activities include seasonal festivals, cultural events, historical museums, theater and nightlife. Beautiful sandy beaches, inlets and harbors offer endless opportunities from swimming and sailing to sea kayaking and fishing. The Southern Maine Coast is a vacation paradise year-round.

Lighthouse
Thing to Do
Notes
Cape Elizabeth's Portland Headlight is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. It is also widely believed that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote many lines of his poems while sitting at his favorite spot near the base of its tower. However, those who only visit the lighthouse are missing out on the rich history of the area and some of the best scenery in central Maine. Two Lights State Park offers unobstructed views of Casco Bay and a view of the two lighthouses. Crescent Beach State Park attracts sunbathers as well as fisherman and water sports enthusiasts. It is a popular spot for families because the crescent shape of the mile-long beach keeps big waves at bay.

Notes
The coastal town of Eastport, though small in size, possesses the deepest port on the East Coast. It is located on Cobscook Bay, which is notorious for its ripping tides and powerful currents. The bay's powerful surges have given birth to a rare phenomenon: reversing falls. Near Pembroke, the rapids that course over Cobscook's rocky bottom actually reverse direction with the tide. The churning water kicks food to the surface, supporting rare forms of aquatic life and attracting seals and eagles at high tide. The tidal flats around this area are an excellent place to search for fossils and view migrating shorebirds.

Average Rating (13):

Boothbay Harbor, ME, United States
Notes
Boothbay Harbor was founded as a fishing and shipbuilding village, and it still operates as such today. In the summer, tourists mingle with local lobstermen, but this seaside town still maintains its rustic charm. The quickest way across town is the footbridge that crosses Boothbay Harbor, and visitors can rent summer cottages along the shore, the best vantage point for watching the activity in the lively harbor. If the water view is not enough, there are quaint village streets to explore and outdoor band concerts and craft fairs to attend. The nooks and crannies of the Boothbay shoreline are ideal for exploration via sea kayak, and the village is also a popular departure point for trips to Monhegan Island as well as whale watching cruises and puffin tours. Sport fishermen depart from the harbor in search of tuna, striped bass, bluefish, and cod.
