Transportation
Istanbul, Turkey
Tue Jun 2 12:00pm - Tue Jun 2 1:00pm
Notes
Just an hour flight from Athens. Attaturk airport is almost 45 minutes away from Sultanahmet area, but we had hotel pickup waiting for us. I realized that it is always good to call up the hotel a day before to make sure the transfer is proper. Despite sending email earlier, wrong time was noted by the hotel. Turan the manager at the hotel was very helpful.

The hotel was very conveniently located. 2 minutes we would reach Divan Yolu (the road with Tram line). The station there was Cemberlistas, one stop away from Sultanahmet station. Tram tokens "Jetons" are 1.5 TL (0.70eu) and you need buy them at the nearby newspaper shop. You maybe better off buying a few of them for the rest of the trip. Trams are generally full and you need to squeeze in. Frequency very good during the day.

Notes
Since we were told that most of the historic places would be crowded by excursion buses, we decided to check out the Grand Bazaar or the covered market.

This place was just 15mins walk from the hotel, across Divan Yolu. This not just covered market, but a roof is nicely painted (see pics) and broad aisles with comfortable lighting.

It was a delight to see shops of Ceramics, Lights, Copperware, Leather, Carpets, souvenirs, paintings, all full of stuff. Everything here requires bargaining. Almost 60% lower than the initial quote. Be careful to see good part of the market before you try for any buy, as you may get cajoled to buying something that you probably don;t need. It would be good too quote low enough and fail in the bargain a couple of times to know the actual 'line of deal'. Same products are found in many other shop or you can always comeback.

Notes
As we walked around and shopped a little bit after a hour of familiarization, we asked for the Spice bazaar. Just about 15-20 minutes walk down sloppy inside roads.

Great number of spices, nuts and flavors are found in abundance. You can see that the quality is good. We bought some Saffron, some shops sell Persian Saffron. You will also find plenty of "Turkish Delight" a sweet delicacy of turkey. you can find that in many different flavors such as melon, strawberry and even Pomegranate (which we liked). You will also find some of the stuff you would have only expected in the grand bazaar here.

We could have simply asked for the tram station and taken a ride, but walked our way back to the hotel, which was tiring.

This is the main palace of the Ottoman Empire which was used by some 30 Sultans. That's a lot of history embedded. More than just seeing the building you should imagine/picturize how this place must have been over those periods - Ottoman empire was known for treachery and deceit even with the family. Reading a little on the web, before you go there will be very helpful. The commotion and chaos on the news that the sultan has been killed by his own son!

Being there early, 9am as the gates open helps. As time goes by many excursion buses bring people and you will have to wait in long line to see each item. Entrance fee here and in most other Istanbul places is about 20TL or 10eu.

Harem, the women's quarter in the palace is one of the main attraction we were told. So we went there first. There is a separate ticket to be purchased inside for 20TL or 10eu again! Reading about Harem on at least wikipedia before hand helps. Other than great tiling and colors of the various sections of Harem, you will be amazed how the Sultans were leading a polygamous life with around 5-6 official wives and large number of second line wives called Favorites and then of course the occationals. The Harem was operated by Eunuchs, cleaver idea as Sultans did not want their women to loose focus. Queen mother was supposed to head the Harem and many beautiful and intelligent girls from all over the empire were brought here to provide the best choice for sultan to continue his lineage.

The section that impressed me most was the one where prophet Muhammad's relics and other holy stuff from Mecca are kept. These were deposited with the sultans for safe upkeep as the empire was more stable and long lasting.

There are many other sections, such as, Treasury (royal jewelery), Dresses, Throne, Courtyard and place where sultan would break fast on Ramzan, Baghdad hall (on capture of Baghdad), Circumcision hall (wow!). The last one is very beautiful and well maintained. We wondered why such elaborate hall for such purpose, but were told that the royal household would have numerous princes, almost 4-5 per wife and hence there would be regular functions here.

Visit Konyali Restaurant (111 year old) at the far end of the Topkapi Palace, as you will find a beautiful view of the Bosporus river and the fort walls. read more here http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/kon…

By now we had covered almost all historical places in the Sulanahmet area and time to start exploring rest of Istanbul.

We walked down Divan Yolu (the main street of Sulatanhmet with Tram) looking at shops and some little shopping upto Sirkesi station. This station is very clean and holds Whirling Dervishes almost every day in the evening on platform#1. Tickets to this program are available at many places elsewhere with placards displayed.

Whirling Dervish is a sufi traditional performance (not exactly a dance) by a sect called Mevlevi followers of Rumi the famous Persion poet and philosopher. Normally an hour program (7-8pm) that could cost about 30eu per person to attend. We could not attend at this time, but ended up buying a DVD to enjoy at home.

At Sirkeci or any other station on the line, you can take the tram to its last stop called Kabatas, on the other side of Golden Horn and across the Galata Bridge.

Off the Kabatas station a short distance away is the Metro line, which has a cable car to take you to Taksim station, just a KM away but a steep climb that we could not have walked.

Step out of the Taksim station and you will find that you are in a highly vibrant square with lot of activity. Since the next day was the begining of Istanbul F1 race, there were many promotional events going on, including Toyota displaying their race car. Taksim square looks to have some historical importance as there are some nice statues, well guarded. However, the key item here is the beginning of Istikal Caddesi street.

Find your way around the Taksim square to this pedestrian-only street full of high class shops. A 2km stretch described by the review here, will keep you engaged every minute. There is a small tram (one car) that can give you a slow ride, but you won't take that unless you have a kid who is pulling you to that.

You can plan nice dinner as the places on the side streets.

Thing to Do
Fri Jun 5 9:00am - Fri Jun 5 12:00pm
Notes
This cruise along the river upstream towards the Black Sea should not be missed. There are two versions 2-hour and 6-hour (with 3 hour lunch break on the Asian side). We took the shorter one as we had other things to do in the day.

Along the same tram line (along Divan Yolu) is a station called Eminonu, where you will find these cruise options. We were kind of shocked to find that the guy selling tickets was dressed in executive attire and talking top quality English! The trip was just 20eu and boats were clean and less crowded. There are high end options with cabins, but this one looked fine, given that the weather was great and temperature outside was 27 deg. C.

The Mediterranean blue waters and shoreline that shows all monuments of Istanbul was engaging. You will be served some Turkish Tea (be ready for a strong dose) and not much else on board.

We passed under two of Istanbul's bridges (suspension bridges) and the return was along the Asian coast.

Asian side is very residential, European side is business place and Golden Horn (also European side) is historic. Each of these 3 areas carry a very distinct style and activities.

This place is walkable distance from Kabatas station on the tram line.

The palace is in good state and you can get a feel for the life of Sultans who lived there in the 19th century and till the new Turkish Republic was formed in the 1920's.

English guided tours will help you understand and explore.

Two things that I found particularly interesting were (1) Hamam, the rooms where sultans took bath. The Alabaster marble was superb. (2) the grand ceremonial hall with its size, decor and opulence, that talked of the sultans might.

End of Istikal Caddesi, you will find that you are on a high ridge and can take the walk down narrow shopping streets. We walked further to find Galata tower (nice). All along there were shops with every kind of Muscial instruments and at the end we need to reach the tram station back (just the one after Galata Bridge).

A short taxi ride from Kadikoy Iskelesi (pier) bought us to Harem bus station.

We took at mini bus to Gebze (bigger town near Hereke) a drive of about 45 mins for 3 eu. No one in the bus talked English, felt little strange in the begining. People were extremely courteous and helped us through non-english communication!

At Gebze was another similar mini bus which took us to Hereke in 30 mins. Here i continued my quest for English speaking persons. Finally found a seaman (Adnan), elderly about 65 yrs, very friendly. He had traveled around the world, showed me his passports proudly. He had been around the 6 continents and had many stories to tell in his broken English.

Adnan was from Hereke and talked highly about the town. He assured us that he will help us around the town.

We first landed at Han Hali (Hali is a carpet shop). You can look up Hanhali.com. This one looked like a premium place with some master piece works. There were a few weavers around, who showed us how they make carpets and explained many technical details to the eager visitors. We were taken downstairs to see carpets that we could buy. They looked little expensive and exquisite, but probably cheaper than prices at the Grand bazaar in Istanbul.

Adnan's sister was the heading Quality Assurance at the Carpet industry in Hereke and well respected round the town.

We had a good feel for Turkish hospitality and the broadminded views of a seaman who thinks the world can live in peace.

We were arriving into Turkey from Greece after a 10 day extensive traveling. Turkey is a big country with lots to see, but we were planning to do Istanbul and surroundings for 6 days, at a comfortable pace and good detail. If you are in a hurry to Istanbul, the good news is that most landmarks are very closely located in the historical area called Sultanahmet.

It was a pleasure to be in Turkey, and our initial apprehensions of difficulties with a 4 year old boy and strict vegetarian diet were found incorrect. You will find good vegetarian food (Turkish bread with spinach/potato filling is like Indian Parata) and great buttermilk (Called Ayran). We carried Ayran with us everywhere.

We were there 9 days in the Eid al Fitr. The town doesn't close as tourists are the lifeblood of the city. We stayed at the FOur Seasons in Sultanahmet with wonderful views of the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofya. Highly recommended. The turks were very nice and accomodating and made us feel at home.
