Day 1: Start off by leaving Boise on Idaho 21 past Lucky Peak Reservoir and up over Moore's Creek Summit.
Stop in Idaho City for a soda and take a walk at Boot Hill where reputedly only 28 of the 200 people buried there died a natural death. The was the largest city in the Northwest at the time of the Civil War, and the former mining camp still sports a number of historic buildings, including a tall skinny, white clapboard City Hall, a blacksmith shop, the Pon Yam house, a territorial jail and the old Idaho World newspaper building.
The Kirkham Hot Springs, just east of Lowman, feature hot waterfalls cascading into sandy rock pools - a welcome respite in the crisp mountain air.
Stop to smell the wildflowers in the small mountain town of Stanley, which is set against the jagged teeth of the Sawtooth Mountains.
A few miles south of Stanley is Redfish Lake, a tree-ringed five-mile glacial lake named for the sockeye salmon that once painted the lake red.
Rent a paddleboat, ride a horse and pick up a free CD at the Visitor Center, which will tell you about the history of the area as you continue your drive to Sun Valley.
Keey your camera handy for the overlook atop 8,700-foot Galena Summit and the Boulder Mountains further to the south. Sun Valley homeowner Clint Eastwood filmed "Pale Rider," one of the most gorgeous Westerns ever made, here.
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters just north of Ketchum, offers interesting exhibits and plenty of advice on day hikes you can take in the area.
Day 2: Cast your fly into the Big Wood River. Or head down to Silver Creek Preserve, a clear water spring that attracts anglers from around the world.
Spend the rest of the day hiking to Pioneer Cabin, which sits in a cirque of jagged peaks. Or take an easier hike along the Fox Creek or Chocolate Gulch loops.
Come evening, put up your feet and let Company of Fools make you laugh at The Liberty Theatre, the house that Bruce Willis and Demi Moore built in Hailey.
Day 3: No trip to Sun Valley would be complete without a drive north of Ketchum to the Galena Overlook, which offers a broad view of the Sawtooth Mountains, named for their resemblance to a saw. Go further, if you like, for a visit to the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery or a stop at Redfish Lake.
Also check out the Harriman Trail - a relatively easy wide mountain bike trail parallels the highway between the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquearters and the Galena Lodge. And the SNRA offers wildlife exhibits for those who wish to stop to look at maps.
Back in town, try your aim shooting clay pigeons at the Sun Valley Gun Club. Check out the current art festival, or just spread out a blanket and look up at the starry, starry night....
