A tip: If you plan to be in the city for a few days, we recommend that you buy the 72-hour pass. It allows you to ride, without restriction, not only the U-bahn, but the city’s trams and buses as well. Just make sure you stamp your ticket the first time you enter the system—or board a bus or tram—and have it with you whenever you ride. If the plainclothes inspectors happen to catch you without it, your wallet or purse will suddenly feel somewhat lighter. And, unfortunately, the old maxim holds true here: ignorance of the law—whether real or feigned—is no excuse. There’s also something called The Vienna Card, which gives you 72 hours of public transport use, along with discounts on sights, cafes, restaurants, and shops. It costs 18.50 euros and can be purchased at the hotel reception.
