Day 1, the Grays left CT on a long haul to London. SAA 220, flight reasonable, crew good, food fine, only hassel in flight entertainment and the fact that the lights did not turn off.

London with Jo and Bryan (Mac's sister and brother in law) was great. They took the kids to a Theme park (must get the name), whilst we undertook some local admin and snuck in an afternoon nap. Chris and Jodi came over for dinner which was great. Mac and Chris had a call with Owen (in Ireland) to discuss his wedding plans for the weekend.

11.00pm GMT heading to bed, 7.30am taxi to the airport to head to Vancouver.

Well we arrived in Vancouver today. Long flight from London but very comfortable on the Air Canada planes. Picked our car up at Avis - a MONSTER - not great for a carbon footprint - but with a family this size we don't have too much choice in the land of large mobiles.

We hit afternoon traffic in Vancouver, which was pretty busy, but we are on holiday, no real rush. The trip up to Whilster along the Sea to Sky high was beatiful.

Arrived at our spot. Great to be "Home" again. It is great to come back to a familiar place. Boys were right at home. The little ones put in a good sleep (9 hours time difference makes a difference).

Tom and Jules, who had arrived before us, also kindly did the first shop! Jules made a delicious pasta for supper.

Saturday
First day on the slopes. Have decided not to go with lessons this trip. Boys wanna just ski and Colls also wants to try just hitting the slopes. Headed to the beginner slopes at Olympic Station to start. A couple of easy runs and the team was back in the groove. Dan arrived a bit after that and we headed back down to the Village on our first family run.

Lunch at Round House Lodge and did a number of slopes around Harmony Bowl, Express. Burn Stew was a little too roady.

Great first day on the slopes. One learning. The King is Dead - Long live the King - Dan is now the man. He is snowboarding so well, hard, fast and some serious air on the last run down!!

Sunday - Wednesday

We have had perfect whether on the slopes. Spring Skiing is really a must do. Upside is the blue skies, the sun tanning (even babes in bikinis). Down side a little slushy towards the end of the day and this morning (Wednesday) it was seriously icey.

Highlights:

Whistler on Tuesday morning with the family - doing a range of blues and greens - Whisky Jack, Ego bowl. Jersey Cream on Blackcomb and Ridge Runner and Twist and Shout!

Today Dan and I did a couple of icey runs in the morning with some great runs down Springboard and Ross Gold.

Then Tom, Dan and I did the Blackcomb Glacier this afternoon. 10.5 km's from top of the glacier to Excelerator Chair!! Awesome views, snow was reasonable and the slopes were quite.

On life off the slopes - Whislter Villiage is really awesome. Second Cup has been our daily late afternoon constitutional for Hot Choc and Cuppa Chinos:). Last night (Wednesday) Dinner at Tratoria in the Mountain Side Lodge was great (kids both fell asleep). service and food was execeptional. A must do, I would recommend the rack of Lamb!

Night before we had a failure to launch at Caramba (although to be fair we were 15 min late) - we had to wait 1 hour for a table. Half our party bailed. Some hung on, food was reasonable and management had the decency to give us a discount.

The House is great!! (thanks Ian) It really is a speacial place and space. We are all very comfortable and feel like we are at home!

1 more day and then we head for the next leg of the amazing race!! Hong Kong!!

Thursday (9 April)

Last day, lazy start but hit the Whistler by 12.00pm. Snowing on top of the mountain. Great conditions. Did the Ego bowl run with Colls, Jay and Josh. Josh then wanted to do the Terrain Park (Jumps and rails etc). Well we had to do it twice. Had lunch, Dan arrived and we took on the park again. So BIG air for Dan and James. Great day to finish on, with a traditonal cuppa at 2nd Cup.

Dinner at Earls with Tom and Jules to finish the week off.

Tomorrow early start to get ready for the trip to Hong Kong!

So we left Whistler and headed for Vancouver Airport. Much more relaxed trip this time - no need to rush. We flew on an Air Canada Flight to Hong Kong. Its a LONG flight, 13 hours and you cross the international date line. So we went from being behind all our friends in SA (9 Hours) one day, to being ahead of all of them the next (6 hours).

Arrived in Hong Kong, initial impressions of the airport were that it's organised. We caught the Airport Express - a high speed train (guess what our GauTrain will be) into Kowloon Station. A 20 min trip. From here we caught an Airport shuttle bus to "the Holiday Inn" - this was the stop nearest our hotel - the Hotel Panorama by Rhombus. Our hotel was a little walk down the road. Colls was a little dodge with my chosen route, but we were at our hotel in 5 mins.

Just to provide some context. We chose to stay in Kowloon. This is part of the mainland or New Territories. Hong Kong Island is in fact across the bay (Victoria Habour). In a sense this is real Hong Kong, were the less well heeled live.

Our hotel was very nice. Due to a room mix up Coll, Josh and myself got upgraded to an executive suite on the 31st floor. View of the Harbour and the lights of Hong Kong were amazing. On these hotel stops James and Dan are roomies. We headed out for a brief walk in the city - really just around the block. The smells and activity of the city were a little overpowering for my weary band of travellers and we retreated back to our hotel to have a bite to eat. We were determined to brave it though and ordered Won Ton Noodles (for four of us) with Pish having Clam Chowder. The Noodles came with some dim sum. It was a big meal, a bit too "smelly" for some in the Gray family, but filling:).

Next morning we decided to take a tour of Hong Kong with a hop-on-hop-off tour company - The Big Red Bus Company. side note - in all our travels we have found these "touristy" guides the best way to see a city. They really are a great first perspective - perfect if you only have a day or two or if you are there for a month. They give you a brilliant overview, with a little history and relevant local context - I would highly recommend them whether it be London, San Francisco or Hong Kong.

So for the day. We took the Blue line first which gave us an insight into the history and layout of Kowloon. From here we walked along the Ave of Stars - waterfront promenade with chinese movie star hand prints (a bit like Hollywood walk-of-fame). There are a number of stars, but guess very few that we know. But stars like Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Ting Lee (:)?). Got a cool pic of the family next to a statue of Bruce!

After a quick Starbucks - even in Hong Kong ("I am hungry") - we headed across the habour on the Star Ferry going to Hong Kong Island. This took us to the start of the Red Route.

The buildings are quite amazing to look at and Dan got a chance to see some really amazing architecture in the flesh so to say. Our next big stop was at the Peak Tram. A Tram running up one of the key hills in Hong Kong. we took the tram up to what was a very touristy place. We also bought the most expensive ice creams I think we will ever eat. Josh and the boys got to play in a kiddies playground at the top and once taking in the sights we decided to walk down. A great walk back into the city through the rain forest walk ways past the many high rise apartments for the very well off. By this stage our little band was shattered and we headed back across the bay to the hotel. A day well spent.

We finished our day with dinner at the hotel's top floor restuarant - soon after mains we had two sleeping kids. The light show was inmpressive though.

Next morning we repacked and headed for the airport via the same route we arrived. Next stop on the Amazing Race - Singapore!!

So we have arrived in Singpore. "Welcome to Singapore, you are the first team to arrive".

This has been a great stop on the Amazing Race. First the airport is impressive. Tourist Info - very helpful. Infrastructure impressive - very familiar feel - like Durbs. Taxi's efficient and staff friendly.

So where did we stay. York Hotel, just off Orchard Road. Comfortable - with great aircon ( trust me - here you need it).

First night we had dinner with the other Grays. Steve and Sue and their boys Tom, Jo and Sam. A great dinner, chicken and veg - like home cooking. Ate at their place and it was great to see where and how the Grays live.

Next morning we headed to China town to meet Sue and the boys. Great insight into some of the history of the Chinese population in Singapore. Some shopping for Dan and Mom, whilst Sue and I got the boys a drink and then took them on a brief tour of a nearby temple.

After that we headed back to Sue's spot for a swim and a bit of lunch. The boys had a great time and Sam even tried to swim without his armbands:).

For the afternoon the SA Grays headed to Sentosa Island. A local tourist destination. You take a cable car to the Island, great views of the Harbour and the City. Then we took the luge down the hill to the beach (we did this three times) - taking the chair lift back up each time.

This felt like a real amazing race destination - Take the Sentosa cable car to the Island - the detour taking the luge to the beach, finished off with a Carlsberg at a local pub on the beachfront:).

It was a great day!

We finished off the day with dinner out at "Flutes at the Fort" - a restaurant in the city in a beatiful "Black and White".

Awesome day - thanks Sue and Steve for the great hospitality.

Next stop Tioman Island!!!

Well the Grays left from Singapore on Wednesday afternoon for Tioman and our Island break at Minang Cove. Seletar Airport is a great place to travel from. when we arrived the officials were already expecting us:) The Staff canteen across the road provided a spot to grab some drinks (our flight was delayed due to bad weather on the island). I grabbed a very good curry there.

Eventually we took off, the flight was short (30 mins), landing in Tekek, Tioman. We were met by As the Captain of the boat from Minang Cove and escorted across the road the harbour departure. Lee was on the boat to meet us (he turned out to be the diving instructor).

As mentioned there had been a storm that had passed through the island earlier that day and it left the sea choppy and we had quit e a bumpy ride from Tekek to Minang Cove - Josh dealt with it well!
