Unscheduled - Ho Chi Minh City

Average Rating (209):

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Notes
I started out with my cousin in Ho Chi Minh City. From district 6, where he and I stayed we were given rides via motorcycles by my uncle and his mom to district 1 where Sinh Cafe resides. This is the travel agency who operates a fleet of travel buses going all the way up to Hanoi from HCM. The cost was 500,000 vietnam dong. This money consist of a booklet that allow for stops in Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue, and finally Hanoi. This essentially allowed us to stop and immerse ourselves in each city along the way and enjoy each own landscapes and culture. The bus is quite nice, fully air conditioned and not too many people. It was only 1/2 full when we boarded it on our trip from HCM to Nha trang

Notes
We got off the bus almost at night and rented a oceanview motel for 210000 dong (about $15u sd). This room is fairly new but the plumbing is bad. The faucets are so easily breakable that it overflows the sink. The room smells a bit also. In the morning we booked a tour to the islands off Nha Trang and visited different theme parks...the Aquarium and the Mermaid Island. During the cruise we stopped in the middle and was stopped to allow for those who wanted to swim the emerald waters.
After this a music fest was initiated and many of those on board are either forced to sing a song or volunteered to do so. The captain ankored his ship and brings out the guitar like instrument to provide the music.
Towards the end of the tour we were given tropical fruits to consume---bananas, papaya, watermelon, etc.

Unscheduled - Hue

Notes
We arrived in the morning and started to look for different motels. My cousin, Nguyen is the master translater. At this point his Vietnamese translation skills became challenging since the Southern accent differs a bit from the Middle and Northern accent. He will get accustomed to it only after we were close to finishing our trip. At Hue, there are tons of antiquities to see. We joined a tour that took us through 3 palaces and a temple and cruised through the Perfume River towards the end. When the boat stops, we ran onto the riverbanks and ran towards the Sinh Cafe bus for 1 mile or so to catch it in time.

Hanoi is my least favorite city. The people don't give bargains and they are not as nice. We live in the old quarters. At this point the motels becomes the most expensive at 250,000 dong per night. We stayed for two nights. The free breakfast the hotel provided consist of a small baguette and one banana. During the day we got a tour that took us to the Ho Chi Minh tomb, the HCM museum, the One Pillar Temple, Another Temple with many stone turtles. At night we got ourselves some cheap Hanoi Beer at 4000 dong and 2 smoked dried squids (around 60,000 dong).

We basically walked around this lake. It is quite small but the walk is fairly peaceful. The doughnuts sold by street vendors are expensive by Vietnamese standards and came at 6000 dong a piece. They are one third the size of California doughnuts but they are on skewer type bamboo sticks. Each stick consit of 4 small doughnuts.

We saw the Ho Chi Minh , but also heard rumors that it is not really him. The real him is somewhere safe from the public. Everyone in line to see him is forced to constantly move. There are 5 or six guards with bayonets constantly watching. The room was extra cold and scary.

We stayed at the Old Chinese Quarters and took a tour to see the city and it's vicinity. The Sinh Cafe hotel that was recently openned is quite amazing. The cost is 250,000 (1/2 off from 500000 dong for Sinh Cafe tour customers). The structure was quality built and was cheap in comparison. The rooms are clean and the plumbing works--although no heated plumbing. We rented our bikes from this hotel at 10,000 dong a piece and used it to tour the riverbanks at night. Quite a safe city considering that all of the bikes are not locked after they have been parked. In the morning, we bought a tour which took us to My Son ruins, a cruise along one of it's rivers and to the small island around there as well as the old Chinese town.

We took a tour from Hanoi and they put us on a bus to Halong City. There we got ourselves onto a junk and headed out to sea. At lunch we were treated to several Vietnamese small dishes and I Rambutan (lychee like fruit) from the vendors near one of these floating manmade docks near these limestone islands. I additionally had bought some The mysterious islands of limestones appear before our eyes like magic and then we proceeded to a cave on one of the islands. The Tien Cung cave was large compared to the ones I have been in California.

Endless rice paddies and some timber farms can be seen on the way from Dong Hoi to Dong Phong Nha. The ride was amazingly gentle since the road is fairly new and there are very few people living in the area.

This is a sizable cave complex in middle Vietnam. We started from Dong Hoi and rode with 2 brothers via motorcycles. It takes about 60 km from Dong Hoi to get to Dong Phong Nha, but the view is more than worth it. You have limestone cliffs in the backdrop and the emerald waters of the river snaking around it.
