Notes
Went to BB Kings on our last trip. Beale Street is the real attraction here. Similar to the feel of Bourbon Street in NO, but cleaner and more family friendly.
The Milwaukee Irish Fest is the largest Irish Festival in the world. To give you an idea of the size, on Sunday morning they had Mass at 9:30AM and 100,000 people attended.
The weather was virtually perfect. We went all three days. The Makem & Spain brothers were good. Solas was great too. We enjoyed the Celtic Tenors. We spent a lot of time in the booths (genealogy & cultural).
We left monday morning and drove along Lake Michigan starting at Port Washington & Drove all the way to Green Bay. Nice views along the way.
The next day we drove up to Sturgeon Bay and Door County. Another great weather day & scenery was really nice.
Marilyn, Bertha & I left fo Lake Geneva on Thursday morning. We called first and made a reservation of the Mail boat tour on Friday morning. We got the last three reservations.
Lake Geneva is beautiful and the boat trip was the best harbor/lake tour we have ever taken. Since we were actually delivering the mail to different homes on the lake, we got in close and the mail girl jumped off the boat picked up the outgoing mail, deposited the incoming mail into the mail box and jumped back on the boar while the boat kept moving.
Friday after the tour, we drove to Milwdaukee for the Irish Fest. Between 4-5PM you get in free, so of course we were there for that. More about the fest later.
Easy day - went to the Old State House in Springfield & took the tour. It was interesting. Then to Lincoln's Tomb for a quick walk around & history talk.
Then drove to Odell, Ill the home of our friend Marilyn. We will tour the highlights of Odell tomorrow morning & off to Lake Geneva on Thursday morning.
A Day in Springfield - spent the morning/early afternoon at the Lincoln Museum and afternoon at the Lincoln home group. Dinner at Krekel's Custard.
Museum was interesting. The 3-D films were entertaining. The replicas & exhibits were well done. The museum was more interested in conveying feelings & emotions about Lincoln, as opposed to facts. Entry fee was $10 for youngsters & $7 for us more mature guys.
The Lincoln home is run by the National Park Service. No fee for the tour. To walk through the house where Lincoln lived for 17 years is amazing.
Driving to Natchez is not a hard drive. We stated at the Comfort Suites in Vidalia, LA (accross the river from Natchez). I recommend getting a river side room. My picture of the gambling boat was taken from the room.
We ate at Slough Daddies in Vidalia (just 1/4 from the hotel). Fried catfish is really good. Menu has recently been changed. Fewer items on the menu & prices up a bit. But still a good recommendation.
Next day (08/08/08) we went to Stanton Mansion & Rosalie house. both very nice and tour guides were interesting & enthusiastic.
Drove through the City Cemetery (Bertha has family - the Pipes & Ferrels) who lived in Natchez. We didn't find their graves.
Dinner at the Malt Shop (great burgers & shakes/malts).
Next day (Sat - 08/09/08) drove to Memphis on Freeways. Got in about 4PM and went into town to eat at The Barbeque Shop. Dry ribs were GREAT1
Walked along the river front and went to Beale street. A lot like Bourbon Street, but cleaner and more family friendly. Pat O'Brien's (duplicate of New Orleans Pat O'Briens) was closing down last night. We enjoyed the piano bar.
Drove to Springfield. Ate at The Pizza Machine (see my review - good place). Drove around town to see where everything (Lincoln) was. We are staying at the State House Inn.
It is a good value ($98) and wonderful location. The rooms and amenities are in very good shape.
