Great trip for the family - even our 8 year old loved it and didn't want it to be over. We really only saw bald eagles during the float, but it was enjoyable as well. If you are looking for some really big rapids, this is not for you, but with kids (8, 10, 12) this was perfect.

We provide rain jackets and pants when necessary. Our life jackets are US Coast Guard approved and must be worn at all times. Optional neoprene wetsuits, booties and gloves are available for rental.
The Teton's were awesome. We saw a moose on our first walk around String Lake. The kids swam in String Lake and walked right across all of it - they thought that was so cool. Water was a bit cold but it was doable.

The horse back ride(1 hour version) worked out great for us "non horse riding" people. They do a great job at keeping it fun and safe on the horses. Pretty much just a walk on a trail out to dinner and then back. Well worth doing. The dinner was good... there was a cowboy singing songs and stories around the campfire as well.
wolves best spot is NE section of park in lamar valley. 3 established packs there.
one of best summer climates in 10 years. no drought due to strong snowpack. might see ppl skiing in beartooth range mid july (not sure about aug)
Old Faithful- see at night or morning not 11-2:30. While waiting for posted time check geyser basindirectly behind OF (hot springs, mud pots, etc. For fewer people when viewing OF, watch from back of it. As approach it, follow boardwalk to R. It will end and trail to upper geyser basin will start. No benches but FEW people
Yellowstone Lake-- picnic and hike there. 5-6 pull-offs on W shore. "getaway" inside park. Go with cooler and head off 100 yds along shore to feel more remote. Great rock skipping!
Black Dragons Cauldron and dragons mouth (VERY popular for a reason)-- 1/2 way betw/ Yell Lakee and G. Canyon of Yell. on W sideof road (inHayden Valley) Cauldron erupte in 1948 w/such force it uprooted trees and coated forest around it with mud. Lots of wildlife here:wolves, elk, bison, bears.
Artist Paint Pots--3-4 miles S of Norris Geyser Basinon E side of road- boiling, ubbling mud! Close eyes and listen-- sound ison several well known cd's. Short hike on dirt path so many are deterred. Do IT!

This was a great place to stay...really felt like we were going back in time. Had a little trouble with a mouse in our room so make sure that you don't have any food in your room and then they won't bother you. They played the piano and violin in the lobby into the evening and we could hear it as we lay in bed. The lights in the room were really dim so it made you feel like they were just candles. We didn't have a bathroom in our room, but we had a sink and the bathroom down the hall worked fine.
5:30PM Old Faithful Inn Dinner DINING 6-TOP - this was a little more expensive then what we were going for, but it was good.
The night rodeo was an experience and we are glad that we did it, but the kids...and parents who have not really seen this before, really didn't enjoy it that much. The kids were really not ready for them to be taking down the calves. They thought it was cruel. They did do a great job at explaining what was going on to the novice like us.
Really like the hotel - pool and breakfast were just right for us.
daily reenactment of street gunfight corner of 12th and sheridan 6-6:30 M-Sa 307.527.7043 - This was not all that good in our opinion. Could have done without it. It is all for a good cause, but it was not very entertaining.
Well worth the drive to see. The mile long walk around it was perfect and we saw a fawn during it. An amazing site.
close encounters site. Joyner ridge trail (1.5 miles)starts/ ends n of the monument about a mile from visitor's center prairie dog colony by the Belle Fourche River
Very cute historic town.. but pretty much just for the gambler. Not great for families.
20 miles betw/ rapid city and keystone: bear country usa, ranch amusement park (go carts, bumper boats, mini golf, midway), Reptile Gardens, rushmore waterslide park
Uncle Mark Here - Great job Sophie and Emma with your blog entries. Colin, where are you? I want to know if you can see the Rocky Mountains yet. How's the Hotel in Denver? Does it have a good pool, because that's the most important thing as far as Ryan and Connor are concerned. Well, that and making sure the cable gets good channels.
Looking forward to your next entry.......Uncle Mark
hey all, thinking lotsa good thoughts about your happy adventures. The camping weekend with the Yergins and Kelleys was fun, not so sure Jenna had a good time tho..camping not her thing Brian said. I start MY adventure tomorrow am...going to Ohio (E of CINCY) and really looking forward to old friends and a change of pace and subject. Hope weather is good for you, getting hot again here...love Nana
We're sure hoping your weather gets a whole lot better. Have you heard about the Grand Canyon dam breaking after 8 inches of rainfall with more expected today? I guess things could be worse for you. NO GIFT SHOP ? ! ? ! ? How can one survive? Colin, it's a good thing you show up in pictures once in awhile, or I wouldn't even know you were on this trip. Obviously you love to journal, but just don't want to hog the computer, right? Thanks again for all your news and pictures. Fishing looks like it might be awesome in the pictures of Colin and his slingshot and the Father/Daughter moment. Do you plan to try? Have fun on your adventure, Linda. Love & fun from your Howell family.
We have been reading your travel journal each day. For some reason our messages keep getting deleted. We have written 150 so far, and none except for the very first one are showing up! Can't tell you how ANGRY that makes us feel......
But anyhow, glad you are having fun. Connor wants to know if the gift shops have rocks. The smooth, colorful rocks that you put in a little bag....
Oh, and Ryan and Connor both want to see pool ratings - a scale of 1 (cold, water heated with a wood fire but the owner forgot to light it today like the Best Western in Munising) to 10 (warm with slides and a lazy river) would do nicely.
Love the trip blog. I feel like I am traveling with you all. Dumbledore is great. Emma played with him and he was very affectionate. We are glad to be home from our trip. We missed our kitties and got sick of all the restaurant food. Wave to Tom, George, Abe, and Ted (or is it Frank, I forget) for us.
Dear Emma - I just wanted to let you know that I think you journal entires are fantastic. You seem to me to be writing at a level WELL above your grade. Keep it up!! Maybe someday you will be an author or a journalist.
Hi Yergins. Sounds like a great trip you're having! Although I would like to hear more about Sophie's bodily functions.
Emma and Sophie, your writing makes me feel like I'm on vacation with you (but without all the boring driving). If you get a little lost and find yourself in North Carolina on the way home, stop on in!
Colin and family-Casey sent me your blog of the trip out West and it brought back many memories of our trips there, outhouses which Doug(our son)had to check out, and Buffolo Bill Cody stuff which Casey never wanted to see again! You guys had quite an adventure
Looking forward to your next entry.......Uncle Mark
