Lolob Arch - the second longest, Double Arch Alcove off Taylor Creek Trail

Do-It-Yourself: From its start on a high, piñon-studded plateau to its end ten miles later at a 30-foot-high (nine-meter-high) waterfall, plunging between red sandstone walls taller than the Chrysler Building, the hike to Beartrap Canyon is a Zion classic. After it picks up with La Verkin Creek, which has a habit of forming enticing pools, the path rarely strays from water. Extra credit: Don't miss the detour to Kolob Arch, at 310 feet (94 meters) across it's one of the largest in the world.

Beside the confluence of the Fremont River and Sulphur Creek, amid the red-rock folds of Capitol Reef, lie the remains of the Mormon ghost town of Fruita. And next door is the fruit of Fruita, 2,600 trees in orchards brimming with apples, peaches, pears, cherries, apricots, mulberries, and Potawatomi plums. Sure, go ahead and pick one. This is God's country, after all.

Stark, remote Capitol Reef National Park is the unsung gem of Utah's impressive parks system. To see it at its best, hike the 9.6-mile (15-kilometer) Upper Muley Twist Canyon loop. The canyon and trail cut directly down the spine of the Waterpocket Fold, a hundred-mile-long (161-kilometer) depression punctuated by towering, polished domes (hence "Capitol") and jagged, sandstone fins (hence "Reef"). There are no official markings; just leave your car at the Strike Valley Overlook parking area and follow the wash north. Book a room at the intimate Red River Ranch near Torrey, where private land abuts the Fremont River and the lodge's restaurant serves up simple, tasty trout.

Uplake Kayaking
Moqui Canyon: about 1.5-2 miles up stream from Halls Crossing marina. This is a great kayaking spot as long as boat traffic is not too heavy. The canyon is relatively long (even at lower lake levels) and has high walls and many large alcoves. When you run out of lake, Moqui is also a nice spot for a day hike.
Lost Eden Canyon: about 1 mile down stream from Halls Crossing marina. This is a short 3-fingered canyon with beautiful sculpted walls and several extremely large alcoves.
Annie’s Canyon: about 15 miles downstream from Halls Crossing marina. A beautiful moderate length canyon that also has great hiking.

Devin's GArden - The well-known section of Arches National Park has some of the most accessible arches in the Four Corners (http://www.nps.gov/arch). Visit iconic Landscape Arch, the world's longest, then continue on the Devil's Garden Primitive Loop Trail to Double O Arch, two gaping holes punched through a sandstone wall. If you're prepared to venture off-trail, head north of Devil's Garden to Far Out Arch, a seldom visited span near Yellow Cat Wash.

For a more intimate introduction, tour Arches National Park's Lomatium Canyon on foot with Moab-based Desert Highlights. The eight-hour trip combines chimney climbing, technical scrambling, and a hundred-foot rappel, with first-rate instruction to put you deep inside the slots and high atop a sweeping mesa. After rocking out, bed down at the secluded Sorrel River Ranch, where rooms sit a mere ten feet from the banks of the Colorado River.

Catch the Perfect Sunset

The end of the day at Delicate Arch is something to behold. In the long light of late afternoon, the arch of Entrada sandstone, perched precariously on the edge of a bluff, seems to glow from within. What was pale red in the heat of the afternoon deepens to rich pink and fiery burgundy. Shadows stretch out to the horizon. Time seems to stand still. And even after the sun is gone and the sky slips toward deep purple, the arch continues to glow for longer than seems possible, burning its way into your memory.
Vitals: To reach the arch, take the one-and-a-half-mile (2.4-kilometer) Delicate Arch Trail (not the Delicate Arch Viewpoint) from Wolfe Ranch.

Horse Canyon: Located in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Horse Canyon is a repository of some of the Southwest's most unique arches (www.nps.gov/cany). The best sites are found off the 4WD Horse Canyon Road (permission required). Check out Paul Bunyan's Potty, a giant formation that looks like it sounds; Castle Arch, a 165-foot (50-meter) twisted ribbon of rock; and Fortress Arch, an impressive 120-foot span. To look for Klingon Battle Cruiser, head two to three miles south of Fortress Arch and a half mile east of Salt Creek.
