Only two minutes on foot away from the cathedral is the late Romanesque church of St. Andreas – in the midst of the Cologne banking quarter. It was founded around 960 by Archbishop Bruno as choral diocese and was outside the town walls at that time. The peculiarity of St. Andreas is the combination of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The Romanesque section shows rich ornamental constructional elements, whereas the late Gothic choir hall impresses with its sophisticated elegance. The side chapels of the nave show extensive remains of murals. A special impression of the room comes from the dark chancel windows from the late 19th century. A notable link is made between Romanesque and modern architecture in the St. Andreas crypt. The extraordinary atmosphere is reinforced by the artificial illumination of the subterranean room: Flat light domes, carried by consciously thin concrete pillars, distribute an indirect light.
