Thing to Do
Notes
One of the oldest English-style landscape gardens and one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, the Englischer Garten (English Garden) is Munich's crowning glory. Although perhaps best known for its nudists, the park is popular with all types of people all year round. Other features include a Chinese pagoda with adjoining beer garden, the Monopteros Greek temple, a river and a boating lake. Visitors can also attend a traditional tea ceremony in the Japanese tea house.

Mittenwald - 106km (66 miles) S of Munich, 18km (11 miles) SE of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 37km (23 miles) NW of Innsbruck
The year-round resort of Mittenwald, in a pass in the Karwendel Range, seems straight out of The Sound of Music. Especially noteworthy and photogenic are the painted Bavarian houses with overhanging eaves. On the square stands a monument to Mathias Klotz, who introduced violin making to Mittenwald in 1684. The town is a major international center for this highly specialized craft.

We had originally planned on staying here, but when we showed up and knocked on the door there was never an answer. We ended up going down the road a mile or so to the Hotel Mueller, which was very nice, and only 90 Euros.
