Giacomo Antonio Domenico Michele Secondo Maria Puccini
Lucca, 22 december 1858 – Brussel, 29 november 1924) was een Italiaans componist. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste operacomponisten aan het eind van de 19e en het begin van de 20e eeuw. Hoewel hij als operacomponist vrijwel onmiddellijk op handen werd gedragen door het publiek heeft hij lange tijd moeten wachten op erkenning van critici en kenners. In zeker mate leed hij hieronder en het gevoel dat hij in de schaduw stond van de reuzen Verdi en Wagner heeft hem gedurende zijn gehele leven gemotiveerd om zichzelf te overtreffen. Zijn laatste en onafgewerkte opera Turandot getuigt hiervan en wordt algemeen aanvaard als een absoluut meesterwerk binnen de geschiedenis van de opera.
